As part of the GeForce RTX 40 Series reveal NVIDIA showcased Portal with RTX a mod that brings some stunning ray-tracing effects to one of the most innovative games of all time. Like Quake II and Minecraft before it, this update will be free to all owners and will arrive in November alongside the GeForce RTX 4080.

Where it will support the new DLSS 3 rendering technology that takes full advantage of the new Ada Lovelace architecture. In addition to full ray-tracing for all of the lighting, the game will also feature new art, models, and a brand new companion cube. Check it out.

Where it gets interesting is how it was created, with developed by NVIDIA Lightspeed Studios leveraging AI and the NVIDIA RTX Remix modding tools that can potentially transform any game into an RTX On experience.
This RTX upgrade builds-upon our work on Quake II and Minecraft, but is extra special, as the tool used to make Portal with RTX will be released for free, allowing you to give the RTX treatment to other classic games. Called NVIDIA RTX Remix, this ingenious modding platform can add ray tracing with just a few clicks, and gives modders the tools to make ambitious remasters, even for games that were previously unmoddable. Simply press a hotkey to import a game, use AI to enhance materials, build custom assets using Omniverse, and export an RTX Mod complete with ray tracing, NVIDIA DLSS 3, and NVIDIA Reflex. RTX Remix elevates modding to a whole new level.

From there we assume the hand-crafted assets were added into the mix. It's a testament to how development will change in the future, where a mix of AI and the human touch create highly detailed worlds. The ray-tracing here is also four times more involved than what was seen in the Minecraft update, with NVIDIA confirming that ray-tracing works through Portals too. Impressive.

The Portal with RTX Steam Page is live now.
