Sony has kicked off the new year with a list of free games coming to the PlayStation Plus' January offerings, which are scheduled to swap over on January 7th.

Last month the PlayStation 4 manufacturer teased its January lineup by noting that it would include standalone DLC inFamous: First Light and The Swapper on PS4, but now we've got the PlayStation 3 and Vita titles too.

First off, it's worth noting that The Swapper is Cross-Buy on all three Sony platforms, not just PS4 as it was teased for last month.

The PS3 offerings are the not too shabby either, with Prototype 2 and DuckTales Remastered up for grabs.

Elsewhere, Vita owners will receive the acclaimed retro arcade game Whoa Dave!, the latest from the Bit.Trip developer Choice Provisions (formerly known as Gaijin Games). The developer noted on Twitter that the eventual PS4 release of Whoa Dave! will offer Cross-Buy support, so if you get the Vita version now you'll be able to snag the PS4 one at no additional cost once that's launched.

The other Vita freebie for the month is Duke Nukem 3D Megaton Edition, unless you live in Germany where Sony can't release it ostensibly due to the country's classification board not allowing it. But fear not, Germans, for Sony is offering you Gravity Crash Ultra instead.

You've still got five days left to grab the December PS Plus offerings of Injustice Gods Among Us: Ultimate Edition, Secret Ponchos, Hitman Trilogy HD, Deadly Premonition: The Director's Cut, Final Horizon and Titan Attacks.

Sony has also noted that PlayStation Plus members will get an additional five days added to their subscription, among other discounts, to make up for the DDoS attack that closed its service for a few days over the holiday. This will be applied automatically to all customers.

Five days for being down for the period of the year where people have the most time to use their new consoles and games? Real smmoth, Sony.

It was down due to DDoS. Can't really do much about that. But yeah, Sony security is lacking.

Why would Microsoft have to match Sony in compensation? Xbox Live was down for less than a day due to these nerds.

Pppfft, it was down for longer than a day. When it did come up it was available only sporadically. It was down for less than PSN, but it was much longer than 24 hours.

What ever you say Zapo. Not sure why you are dragging Microsoft into this. Got nothing to do with this thread.

It was in response to Raven's comment as he was b****ing about the compensation, when I was trying to highlight that Msoft had done zip all yet.

I'd also like to know what the new Gold games are, aside from compensation. They due to cycle soon?

My jimmies aren't rustled at all mate I'm just saying that most the guys at Xbox don't care for compensation for this because they were all over it like a bad rash. It might of taken a bit over 24 hours to get Xbox Live up again but I haven't seen anyone bring it up again since it happened.

Jeffro, just out of interest, do you own a PS4 or an Xboxone or neither or both?

I have a Xbox One and a PC. Never played PlayStation but I don't have any malice towards them.

The point I'm trying to make is, that there was a fairly extended period of time that both PSN and Xbox Live were offline for. People who purchased new consoles (such as myself) were likely unable to use them due to the fact that they need to be online - or, have games that are required to be downloaded as part of a pack-in.

IMO, both outages were for an unacceptable duration at a very awkward time.

On one hand Sony has come out with compensation, and Microsoft nothing. That was my point, it's totally up to you whether or not you think the compensation is appropriate, or even warranted. Personally, I'm a little disappointed in Msoft for offering zip, especially because Sony is offering something.
