It seems Australia is in love with the PlayStation brand according to new reports from the Australian NPD charts, with 2013 marking both PlayStation 3 and the newly released PlayStation 4 as the top brands in the total interactive entertainment category.

While stock might still be almost non-existent for those looking to pick up the PlayStation 4, this hasn't stopped the new generation console from moving into the top spot for next generation console sales last month.

“It has been an enormous 12 months for PlayStation in Australia,” said Michael Ephraim, Managing Director, Sony Computer Entertainment Australia. “These results reflect not only the passion Australians have for the PlayStation brand overall, but also the strength of the individual platforms we have. For PS3 to perform so well, nearly seven years after its launch, is testament to the features, entertainment services and quality gaming titles delivered throughout its lifecycle and in 2013.”

According to reports from VG247, local digital trends are also increasing, with Telsyte putting digital sales at approximately $899 million. This is almost a 50% increase from 2012, and includes digital game sales, downloads, subscriptions and mobile games. The total value of the Australian games market in 2013 was about $2 billion, reports local trade body IGEA.

“Traditional sales have remained steady across the industry. Despite concerns about retail, software sales recorded over $654 million dollars for 2013,” IGEA boss Ron Curry said.

Interestingly, Telsyte also highlights that Steam now makes up "over half of all Australian digital games spending in the PC market," thanks to gaming events, deals and special offers. Consumer expenditure was also high when it came to in-game micro-transactions, up more than twice compared to up-front mobile game purchases in 2013.

I like that digital purchases are growing. Especially on the console market.
