With the developer behind the presumed
PlayStation 5 launch title
Spider-Man: Miles Morales,
Insomniac Games, taking to Twitter overnight to confirm that the game will feature an optional Performance Mode allowing the game to run at 4K 60 frames-per-second. And interesting reveal because it all-but confirms that the Quality Mode will be 4K 30fps.
It's worth noting that having the PlayStation 5 render a game in native 4K is a step up from the PlayStation 4 and PS4 Pro - there the original Spider-Man ran at a dynamic sub-4K resolution sitting roughly in-between 1440p and 4K at 30-fps on the PS4 Pro. 1080p on the base console.
Of course frame-rate is only a small part of the picture, with Mile Morales set to feature a number of visual updates over the PS4 original - from better textures to effects, lighting, and shadows. Plus, take advantage of the high-speed storage to allow the entire city to load in an instant.
In fact, we wouldn't be surprised to learn that this 'Performance Mode' arrives with some form of ray-tracing disabled. Giving players the option here makes a lot of sense because as great as ray-tracing is, hitting 4K 60-fps without something like NVIDIA's DLSS 2.0 rendering can be a challenge on even the most powerful rig. Also it's great to see that native 4K will become a PS5 norm (we assume), because 1440p and checkerboard rendering ala the PS4 Pro did lead to noticeable visual artifacts compared to the real-deal.
In the end though, it's 60 frames-per-second Spider-Man. Very cool.
