With the console's planned 2020 release about a year or so away, and the
PlayStation 5 naming still to be officially confirmed - a patent has revealed what the PS5 dev kit looks like. These being the boxes that developers use to build, debug, and test game for consoles. Sometimes they often look like the consoles, but odds are the PS5 dev kit is more of a "for the developers" thing.
Because, in terms of looks, it's certainly out there. And very futuristic. After discovering the patent, Dutch publication
LetsGoDigital also put together some renders.
After its leak, one of the developers at Codemasters - Matthew Stott, Senior Artist - took to Twitter to confirm the design as being the PlayStation 5 Dev Kit. The design is credited to Sony technical director Yasuhiro Ootori.
No doubt it's a bold design, and with Sony already confirming that the console will feature a custom AMD Ryzen CPU and custom AMD Radeon Navi GPU alongside cutting edge SSD technology - it's perhaps a statement on just how far the PS5 will go in terms of hardware improvements over the PlayStation 4.
