That is, according to some removed text that
Ubisoft put up relating to backwards compatibility and
its library of titles for the
PlayStation 5. As it stands now, what we know to be true is there -- that PlayStation 4 games will be playable on the PS5 with support for cross-gen upgrades and multiplayer.
The interesting stuff though, was redacted.
As per GamesRadar the text that that has since been removed stated, "Backwards compatibility will be available for supported PlayStation 4 titles, but will not be possible for PlayStation 3, PlayStation 2, or PlayStation games".
This is in line with official word from Sony which so far has been that the PlayStation 5 at launch will support and be fully backwards compatible with the most popular PlayStation 4 games. A statement it revised to include the entire library, but sources close to the PS5 report that the console will essentially emulate PS4 speed in terms of GPU to offer that functionality -- with upgrades or enhancements ala what the Xbox Series X can do on a per title basis.
On that front the Xbox Series X builds on the Xbox One and its support for each and every Xbox console dating back to the original Xbox. In terms of legacy titles it's expected that Sony's streaming PlayStation Now service will offer classic games as it does now for the PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, and original PlayStation on the PS5. Though the method there is streaming, and it's a service (ala Stadia and GeForce NOW) that has yet to reach our shores in the same way that Xbox Game Pass has with its option to download and play games natively.
So, even though the statement has since been removed the TL:DR is that native backwards compatibility for the PS One, PS2, and PS3 will not be there -- at least on day one -- on the PlayStation 5.
