According to a recent roundtable discussion via IGN with Sony’s Worldwide Studios, Shuhei Yoshida, the upcoming next-gen PlayStation 4 console will not support the previous DualShock 3 controllers currently available for the PlayStation 3.

Yoshida noted that "No, [PS4] doesn’t support DualShock 3," however did state that the PS Move will be supported. Yesterday we saw the reveal of Sony's new PlayStation 4, and alongside it the new DualShock 4 controller which supports a Vita-style trackpad, light bar on top to distinguish between players and a share button for social interactions. While this news isn't exactly surprising - the DualShock 4 controller is quite a different beast - it would have been nice to be able to save some money by using the previous controllers similar to a USB dongle that was made available for PlayStation 2 controllers on the PlayStation 3.

For a run down of all the latest PlayStation 4 news, you can check out the technical specifications here, an updated reveal of the full conference here and a PlayStation 4 Media Matinée here.

Whoever wants to use the analogue sticks of a Dual Shock 3 and under does not belong to the world of the vidya. The new ones look like you could actually control a golf swing in Tiger Woods without the aid of prayer.
