Which means lifetime sales of the PlayStation 4 will no doubt hit 100 million before the arrival of the PlayStation 5. The number represents total consoles sold as of December 31, 2018 - with 5.6 million PS4s sold through the 2018 holiday season.

“I would like to express my deepest gratitude to our passionate community around the globe, and our partners, for helping us achieve these milestones," notes President and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment John Kodera whilst hinting at the next 100 million milestone. "This year, we will bring more enhanced experiences to our fans along with a highly anticipated lineup of games that are only possible on PS4. As we look toward the next PS4 milestone, SIE will continue to evolve, and we will further expand the platform to deliver the best interactive entertainment experiences to the world.”

The announcement by Sony Interactive Entertainment also notes strong individual game sales with Marvel's Spider-Man, which came out in September last year, selling an impressive 9 million copies worldwide as of November 25. Also, surprisingly, for the month of November the PlayStation Network had 90 million monthly active users - which points to the impressive fact that of all the PlayStation 4 consoles sold, people are using them.

With Microsoft no longer reporting on physical sales of the Xbox One console family, industry analysts have made the educated guess that sales sit at roughly half or less than half of the PlayStation 4. With the Nintendo Switch still relatively new, its performance so far has been impressive and in its first 21 months on sale in the U.S. has outpaced sales of both the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 during the same time-frame.

That said, 91.6 million units sold makes the PlayStation 4 one of the most successful consoles of all time - with continued success and growth since its original debut way back in 2013.
