With the developer taking the project to Kickstarter, where it quickly smashed through stretch goals (one of those being a Steam port) to bring back the studio's Wii U title The Wonderful 101: Remastered. As for why a well-known developer like PlatinumGames went the crowdfunding route, the studio notes that financially it's not quite in a position to self-publish its own games.
In this game, players take control of the Wonderful Ones, heroes from all over the world chosen to defend the Earth from all manner extraterrestrial threats! When the peaceful Blossom City comes under attack by alien invaders, Wonder-Red, Wonder-Blue, and the rest of the Wonderful Ones suit up and unite to save the world!
The studio is confident it will be able to deliver the game in April of this year, which is pretty close. As mentioned above its already met its initial goal and will be finding its way to PC and PS4 too. Here's the reasoning for taking the remaster project direct to fans.
Although PlatinumGames has been able to grow over the years thanks to the players and our fans, we still haven’t been able to fully realize our long-time dream of self-publishing our own IPs. With your support, we hope not only to bring The Wonderful 101 to a wider audience on a variety of platforms, but also to add some content that will enhance the experience even more! This campaign is your chance to empower us to pursue self-publishing and take our destinies into our own hands.
And here's the response relating to PlatinumGames' recent investment from Tencent.
Although PlatinumGames has recently received a capital investment from an outside firm, our plans for The Wonderful 101: Remastered precede that agreement, and capital received from the investment will not be used to fund the development costs associated with the project.
With the community response and support for The Wonderful 101: Remastered, no doubt this will empower PlatinumGames to self-publish riskier projects.
