Independent developer and creator of the hit inter-dimensional title Fez has revealed that his upcoming sequel will not be coming to Xbox at this time. According to a recent interview by
Polygon in which Fish was asked what platforms he's considering for the sequel, FIsh responded with "Not Xbox."
The decision to not put Fez 2 on the Xbox platform shouldn't come as a surprise for many Fez fans after the initial release on Xbox 360. After launching in 2012 on Xbox Live Arcade, a patch was pushed out to fix some of the game's bugs upon launch. The patch was revealed to have caused some saving issues for a select few users, in some cases completely deleting their saves. The patch was then pulled from the game by Microsoft.
Fish claimed that he was
offered a second chance at re-certifying the patch, however at a cost too high that effectively blocked the new patch coming to Xbox 360. A Windows version was later released
this year on Steam and other services that offered the new patch.
"It's a shitty numbers game to be playing for sure," the developer wrote on his blog at the time, "but as a small independent, paying so much money for patches makes NO SENSE AT ALL." Polytron added that if Fez had been released on Valve's Steam service "the game would have been fixed two weeks after release, at no cost to us." In a follow-up tweet, Polytron wrote "HEY! only a few months left to our XBLA exclusivity!"
Fish has yet to actually reveal which platforms Fez 2 will see a release on, but has noted that the PlayStation 4 is tempting him due to the large indie-friendly approach that Sony are taking. Fish notes that the "PS4 seems to be doing everything right," revealing that "it's too early to tell how everything is going to unfold but their heart definitely seems to be in the right place."
"Whether or not I would develop for it comes down to how the platform holder treats me. With Microsoft they've made it painfully clear they don't want my ilk on their platform. I can't even self-publish there. Whereas on PS4, I can. It's that simple. Microsoft won't let me develop for their console. But Sony will."
