PC Power Leveraging Battlefield 3, Consoles Suffer

In what is an open and shut case of PC being the dominant visual and grunt force in gaming, a high-profile title is poised to finally remind the gaming world that the desktop platform is where visual and performance evolution actually happens.

Battlefield 3, using Frostbite 2.0, will run at 60fps and at 1080p on a decent machine and look every bit as good as every video we've seen so far. Consoles, on the other hand, will suffer what the PC has of late in that they'll get a lesser version due to focused PC development. 720p at 30fps is what DICE have revealed lounge-room players will be getting, which is half the frames-per-second Modern Warfare 3 will run at - one of Infinity Ward's biggest touts for their next shooter.

As part of videogames week on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, DICE debuted the console version (PS3), and we've embedded that video for you below.

Ah, glorious PC master race :P That being said, consoles are an excellent machine in their own rights, but what I hate is when a console title is simply ported to PC with no real development mind besides keybinding.

Also, that video revealed knifing as a actual melee weapon, instead of the old quick knife.

What did everyone expect? Of course its going to look crap compared to a PC. For a console game, its not bad though. There's been a few troll articles getting around like this. (not that I care, because PC is the best platform regardless).

I just can't get over how arkward that aiming looked... I almost couldnt watch. Mouse/keyboard FTW.

Funny seeing all the console fan boys crying that their 3+ year old console cannot run the game at the same visuals and resolution as the PC version... how dumb can you be not to realise tech has moved A LOT in 3 years.

It is by no means BAD, it is just that for ONCE the PC is actually being leveraged that way it should have been all along. And EA will make squillions from it.

While I think this is awesome, and its great to see them developing with PC as a lead platform, if they can't be competitive with Modern Warfare on the consoles, then they've already lost.

yeh unfortunately the amount of pc-only to console gamers on here doesn't really reflect the sheer volume of console gamers that play these games. pc gamers are the minority

it's great they are going the PC route etc, but at what sacrifice to the viability of the game as a whole

of course, if you want to run it at the better settings on the PC, you're going to have to have a relatively new PC.

So it'll still sell buttloads more copies on console no doubt.

What Khel said. I'm confused, I thought they were looking to outdo CoD altogether, now it's just on PC? eh.

on another note, I watched my mate playing blops on 360 on sunday arvo, he was pretty fkn good. FPS' on controller aren't my thing but I gotta hand it to em, they're not half bad.

Modern Warefare 3 will sell like hotcakes simply because of the name. Even though I think we all know that BF3 is the superior game, MW3 will win because of the 360 fanboys. Sadly, against that not many games stand a chance in terms of sales.

Yes, I think I'll definitely buy this for PC, instead of hanging around the backs of trucks, where I usually find games after they've fallen off.

Also; Paveway, just because there aren't as many PC-only gamers these days, doesn't mean PC doesn't take a giant turd all over consoles for gaming (which it magnificently does).

i own a ps3 and i just won't buy fps games on console because i grew up playing cs etc on pc, you can't beat it

but unfortunately consoles are what makes the companies the money these days

you will see less and less games catering primarily for pc users.

This will sell well on consoles still.

I'm yet to see battlefield 3 posters on the sides of buses and whatnot. They are going to have to step up their advertising game if they want to outdo Modern Warfare.

P.S. MW has always, and will always be an abbreviation of Mech Warrior in my eyes.

Iv got a decent P.C and a 360 that just collects dust cant be f***ed with it. Tried playing on xbox live and the people who play are just kids.Least on p.c you have people 20+years age playing not kids! I have been playing cod for years and i think it is a great game though it is just getting plan boring and the same old game engine! BF3 may not have many players on the p.c version, at least there wont be kids! its great to play with a more murture bunch of P.C GAMERS!!!!!

From the looks of the video theres no quick knifing, same knife mechanics as bf2. Thank god!!!!! Quick knifing is so bad, I can't believe it was even used in bc2. Quick knife = annoying noobs.

Hey pave, I don't think consoles will be the superior thing soon. A lot of the big companies are turning back to the PC market because they are realising they can push technology more on a PC and actually make better games. Hell, even Microsoft is saying they want to get back to PC gaming. They just need to figure out a swell way to curve piracy, which I know exactly how. Make better games. Better games means more people will buy it.

Consoles are still going to be the majority. Theres a hell of a lot of xbox 360 and ps3 users out there who wouldn't even know where to start when it comes to gaming on PC, or who just don't care. Like pave said, this forum isn't the best indicator, cos a lot of us are PC gamers and have been since the early days of PC gaming, but we're in the minority sadly :(

Take modern warfare 2 for example, seems to be hard to find good figures for PC sales cos VGchartz doesn't have any figures for sales in america, but it has 700,000 copies sold on PC in europe, compared to just short of 4 million copies on 360 and another 4 million copies on PS3. 12.5 million copies sold worldwide on 360 and 9 million copies sold worldwide on PS3.

I don't disagree, just saying, if EA want to win the war, they gotta win it on the consoles. I'm expecting BF3 to be an absolutely s***-hot experience on PC and I can't wait, but its not the version thats gonna bring them the big bucks.

It's sad that this is the case. Consoles make up most of sales now so it's nice they are building the game for PC first and then changing it for consoles but it's 1 of the very very few games to have this happen now.

You make it sound like the consoles got a poorly optimized port when that is hardly the case. They simply made a game for current tech, which obviously has to scale back for '06 hardware. Anyone complaining how the game ran on a 6 year old pc would simply be laughed at. I'm sure if they could manage 60 fps too if they sacrificed all that delicious detail from their art assets, but why would you...

Depends on the whether you care about max settings or not :P If you can run bfbc2 at decent settings then you should have no trouble. Max settings will require top of the range I'd say.

Anyway it is still 4-5 months until release... plenty of time.

I cannot remember the last time a FPS was being designed to embrace PC's more so than consoles(and dedicated servers). We PC gamers need to spread the word and buy Battlefield 3 to show the gaming community just how strong the PC is. Then Carmack might rethink his strategy and support PC's over consoles.

Here's another site suggestion we could digitally sign once we've purchased Battlefield3. Would be awesome to see every Battlefield 3 owner sign such a thing. Could get up in the millions!

This is all great for people who can afford to upgrade their PC every 2-3 years, alas I am one of many who can't after my desktop blew up again and I sit here typing on a 4 year old Asus F5RL laptop sporting speedy a T2330 (1.8 ghz) duel core processor and lightning fast Radeon Xpress 1100 video chip :( My laptop is lucky to run solitaire smoothly and can't afford a gaming laptop for another 10 months or so, and even if I fix up my desktop AGAIN it isn't fast enough to run BF3 in 1920X1080 even IF my monitor supports it which it doesn't! (E8500 3.2ghz, 4 Gig of DDR800 Ram, GTX285). This all means that I will have to play it on my PS3 which isn't necessarily a bad thing, I have been enjoying lots of PS3 games on my 52 inch Sony Bravia screen and from this video it still looks really nice, but if it doesn't play smooth as MW3 they will lose alot of buyers maybe even myself. (sigh) One thing I can say for the PS3, 4 years old 0 crashes and 0 reformats, 0 breakdowns even in the heat of summer something I can't say about my Desktop.

I will also buy this on PC, bought bad company 2 last night on EA Origin since we have quite sime time till october and I only got a PC again recently. The xbox has been collecting dust for a year now. EA's Origin I am quite a fan of, was getting full download speeds ie 10mb/sec whereas steam jumps from fewhundred kb/s to mb/s

Eorl - Not what I've read. Carmack goes where the money is (who can blame him) He's totally focused on his consoles now. He admits PC's are superior however that's not where the money is. As for RAGE it'll always look better on PC but that's a given.
