Magicka developer Paradox has spoken out about piracy on the PC platform, revealing that the developer would rather incentivise players than push them into a corner. Paradox Interactive CEO Fredrik Wester shared his thoughts on the matter in a recent interview with GameSpot, saying he dislikes digital rights management (DRM) schemes as a form of stopping piracy.

"It can punish players who actually bought the game," Wester said. "I remember buying Civilization III, and I couldn't install it because I had something else installed. I had to uninstall two different programs, change settings...it was a hassle."

On the other hand, those who pirated the game had a faster, more convenient experience. Wester would prefer those who actually purchase his games receive the optimal experience, an attitude that defines the Paradox approach to dealing with piracy, and one that others like Good Old Games are trying to bring back.

"I have no idea how many of our games are pirated," Wester said. "We don't really have any intention of finding out or hunting these people. What we want to do is provide people who bought the game legally a better service. With frequent updates; good and convenient services; that's how we fight piracy. I hope it works. I keep my fingers crossed."

Just add a video about how people wouldn't steal a car or rob a bank at the start, works for the DVD industry.

Unsure about this quote and your meaning.

Gaben sits upon the Throne of DRM.

I love Paradox. They are great to their customers. Crusader Kings 2 and EU4 get so much love from them and the DLC they release adds a tonne of new content and is priced fairly. Plus they have sales on every other week. I think they give each game a 2-3 year support cycle where they release major addons.

EA has it down pat, they charge the customers willing to buy their products four times over!

Base Game $99.99
DLC or Premium Membership $99.99
Mod sold as a new base game $99.99
DLC or Premium Membership for new Mod which was sold as a base game. $99.99

^ "a service problem" but I was pretty close. Been a while since I read the article anyway. The part about Russia is pretty interesting and as far as Gaben sitting upon the throne of DRM... I'd say Steam does much more good than harm in terms of the accessibility and pricing of games worldwide, would you really argue for alternatives? While GOG is pretty good it doesn't have everything.

Pricing of games worldwide? Steam regularly and consistently f**** us with Australia tax.

Gabe cultist confirmed. Which is fine.

Publishers set the prices on Steam, just like publishers choose to use Steam's DRM functions. Hell, this whole thread is about a publisher that doesn't f*** us on prices and has moved away from using DRM on Steam releases.

Sick of that cop-out. Steam provides the platform that allows for the regional pricing. Building an evil tool is just as bad as wielding one.
