The Oculus Rift, crowd-founded, virtual reality head-mounted display started shipping out recently to Kickstarter backers, and one of the developer kit devices has found its way to the crew at tested.com --the online tech publication founded by Mytherbusters guys.
Tested's Norman Chan and Will Smith appear in a 44 minute video walkthrough of the Rift, offering the most comprehensive overview of both its hardware and software features that we've seen so far, short of being able to actually wear one yourself.
The video demonstrates Team Fortress 2 running on the Rift, explaining the calibration process and the various options and adjustments that Valve has experimented with to accommodate the different needs of head-mounted VR gaming, and the whole general user experience. Check out the video below.
The initial developer kit release of the Rift is intended for game creators to establish a foundation of VR-supporting products in preparation for a more feature-packed consumer-targeted device at a later date.
I'm wondering just how bad the disorientation can be from this. I'm not one to ever get motion sick/boat sick so I rkn I'll be fine, hopefully. Still thinking this will be awesome for Arma.
I love the idea behind this but fear no one outside valve would care enough to support any games with it. Although if you ask me this + thief 4/dishonored would be so epic.
Trauma, I've yet to hear reports of anyone who's used it and gotten disoriented (though maybe I just missed those reviews?)
You can adjust the 3d and various other things to help with the motion sickness, apparently, so I think it should be right *shrug*
And DM, plenty of units sold and there are some pretty big PC names willing to put their names behind it, so I think once the rest of the market checks out the unit sales, they might decide to jump on the bandwagon.

They touched on it a lot in this vid, they also said that they are advised to ease into it bit by bit.
I'd guess the new Unreal engine will support it, and lots of games will be made using that tech so thats promising.
Yea they said in the vid unreal support is coming, unity already support it.

Aye, but from what I've heard of it, that's probably more just a conservative guideline. Apparently the latency is quite low (which is what caused most of the motion sickness previously) and your eyes focus as if you were looking through the screens.
With the extra config in games, it seems they've probably got it under control.
And Unreal engine support + unity support is a pretty big deal, those are two of the biggest game engines out there, so potentially, it will allow a lot of games to use it in the future.
And some of the other big names that apparently ordered dev kits also makes me think I'll probably drop the cash day one when they bring out the consumer model.
Personally, I want them to get War Thunder to support it. I think that would be worth it just for that XD
Wasn't originally interested, but ordered one after seeing how well the device is thought out in the vid (with respected to using adjustable lenses / viewing distance, the calibration routines and the half dozen control/view modes in TF2).
$300 + $67 shipping to .au. Looks like they are fulfilling pre-orders out-of-order and prioritising north-american customers, so hopefully all the international ones will arrive by June ...
Would love it if eye-tracking was added to the retail version, to move your view around with where you look.
I think I am going to wait a generation or two before I buy a VR headset. Having screens that close to your face and them being anything less than near perfection would be annoying I reckon.
why buy the developer model when they're working on a better version for retail?
I develop hardware for a living, so wanting to taste an emerging tech/product 1 to 2 years before the retail release isn't anything out of the ordinary ...
