As part of the big GeForce RTX 4090 and GeForce RTX 4080 reveal, NVIDIA's next-generation RTX hardware built on the cutting-edge Ada Lovelace architecture, NVIDIA also unveiled DLSS 3. More than just the next version, it has been built to take advantage of new AI hardware found inside the GeForce RTX 40 Series.

Which also means DLSS 3 will be limited to the RTX 4090 and RTX 4080 GPUs.
NVIDIA DLSS 3 with Optical Multi Frame Generation multiplies performance on GeForce RTX 40 Series graphics cards by using AI to generate more frames. DLSS 3 analyzes sequential frames and motion data from the new Optical Flow Accelerator in GeForce RTX 40 Series GPUs to create additional high quality frames. NVIDIA DLSS 3 also includes NVIDIA Reflex, so each of these titles will be even more responsive for all GeForce RTX gamers.

It all comes down to the new Optical Flow Accelerator which "feeds pixel motion data from subsequent frames to the DLSS neural network, generating new frames on the GPU, ensuring performance accelerates even in CPU-bound scenarios". Okay, so that might not make a lot of sense but the end results see a massive 4X boost in Cyberpunk 2077's upcoming Ray Tracing: Overdrive Mode.

DLSS has been the secret sauce in bringing performance to games with ray-tracing. Even without DLSS the new Ada Lovelace GPUs offer up to three times the ray-tracing performance compared to the previous generation via "twice the ray-triangle intersection throughput" and other new workload breakthroughs. Not to mention the new energy-efficient and powerful TSMC 4N node (the GeForce RTX 30 Series was built on Samsung 8N). Ada's 4th generation AI Tensor Cores present a similarly massive leap in throughput and processing, which when paired with new hardware is what makes DLSS 3 possible.

An insane boost to frame rates whilst retaining visual fidelity. In addition to the impressive Portal with RTX, NVIDIA also showcased Microsoft Flight Simulator running with DLSS 3 enabled.

Plus, the highly anticipated A Plague Tale: Requiem with with ray-traced effects and NVIDIA DLSS 3.

With DLSS 3 set to launch alongside the next-gen RTX GPUs in October, NVIDIA has revealed the first batch of games and apps (over 35) to implement the new technology - which includes Unreal Engine 4 and 5 and Unity.
