As part of its CES 2021 presentation NVIDIA announced a new line of GeForce RTX 30 Series GPUs for laptops - with the RTX 3060, RTX 3070, and RTX 3080 set to power a large number of mobile gaming rigs in 2021. And there's over 70 models launching in the coming months.

As expected the laptop version of the RTX 30 Series will be different than the desktop viariants, using a lot less power and featuring different specs. Plus, they have to fit inside a laptop shell.

That said, the line-up is based on the impressive Ampere architecture and will offer up to 2x the efficiency over the previous RTX-gen. Plus, third generation for Max-Q technologies is coming for thin and lightweight designs, and by default all Max-Q models will leverage NVIDIA's Dynamic Boost 2.0 tech which balances power between the CPU, GPU, and memory from frame to frame. A process that will lead to improved performance across the board. Very cool.

Although NVIDIA hasn't released detailed benchmarks, on the account of laptop configurations varying wildly from model to model, it has outlined what players can expect with the new range of GeForce RTX laptops.

GeForce RTX 3060 - This entry-level Ampere GPU will provide around 90-fps on the latest games at 1080p with details set to maximum. NVIDIA notes that this is faster than the previous flagship GPU for laptops, the GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER.

GeForce RTX 3070 - Here it gets interesting and points to 2021 being the year we start to see a lot more gaming laptops with 1440p displays. The mobile RTX 3070, like the RTX 3060 will deliver around 90-fps on modern games with detail settings cranked, but at the QHD resolution of 1440p. This also paves the way for better utilised high refresh-rate 1080p displays offering over 144 Hz.

GeForce RTX 3080 - NVIDIA's new mobile flagship is set to arrive with up to 16GB of VRAM and will power the flagship products from the likes of Lenovo, ASUS, Alienware, MSI, Gigabyte, and others. It's the 100+-fps GPU for those looking for absolute best in laptop performance.

The main takeaway here being that the RTX 3060 is more powerful that the current most-powerful gaming laptop GPU, which puts the new GeForce RTX 30 Series for laptops on par with the impressive desktop models in terms of generational leaps forward. That and 1440p is set to become more commonplace in the months ahead.

Of course laptops are very different to desktop rigs, but the RTX 30 Series here leverages the same cutting-edge features found in, say, the GeForce RTX 3080 Founders Edition. DLSS rendering, real-time ray-tracing, and even the recently announced Resizable BAR Support to further boost performance by taking full advantage of PCI Express lanes. Creators will be able to take full advantage of GPU rendering for video editing and so forth. Plus, RTX Broadcast.
