I tried again, and got no further than the first place you can travel to from the game's initial portal before I was throwing the controller around and skipping back to Quantum Break. Joaby, however, loves this shit. He lives for it, and so was kind enough to impart his review experience along to you, the AusGamers punters.

Here's a snippet from his in-depth PC review.
Before we begin, let's talk spoilers.

Souls game players exist upon a spectrum between two types of gamer — explorers and tourists. Certainly these archetypes exist in all facets of gaming — witness the mad geniuses who to this day plumb the depths of what is possible in Super Mario — but they are explicit in their existence with Dark Souls games.

Explorers are in it for the experience of discovery. They want to find everything, to piece together the puzzles, to solve the bosses without any help. They want to be that guy, the one their friends ask for help when stuck. And they will more often than not respond with 'are you sure you want me to tell you?'

On the opposite end of the spectrum, the Tourists want the experience itself. They want to jump on wikidot and read about what to do next, where to go so as to not miss anything. They want their explorer friends to tell them the trick to the boss, they want to know about a cheesy strat to earn an early game sword of great value.

Neither part of the spectrum is 'right' in any sense...

What a brilliant read from a reviewer that is clearly familiar with the Souls series and also gave this game the love and time it deserves to review honestly and thoroughly. After finishing DS2 and Bloodborne only two nights ago, as your review states, I know this is my GOTY already. What a brilliant franchise from (see what I did there) a brilliant developer that truly knows gameplay, gameworlds and gamers in many ways like no others do. Annual leave booked for the 12th with my CE preordered waiting to go. I chose PS4 even though I have a more than capable PC. I feel there is a Sony heritage with Souls and the stabilty albeit at 30fps works for me. Again, thanks for the review, cant wait to die....again.

haha, I like your take on the swamps dude, made me laugh.
The lack of armor upgrades whilst having s*** loads of weapon paths seems to be a direct result of Bloodborne. Fashion souls was too strong for Miyazaki to resist.

from what I've seen so far I'm expecting the combat to be Bloodborne with shields, is that a wild statement or pretty close ?

I think I'm with Steve, I just can't get into Souls games. Which kinda annoys me, cos they're always highly regarded as great games and I feel like I'm missing out on some awesome gaming experiences, but I tried with Bloodborne and I just couldn't get into it. It was a great looking game, and solid mechanics and everything and I even enjoyed the gameplay to a degree but it just never fully engaged me. When I turned it off and stopped playing it, I just had no drive to go back and play more. I really wish I did :(

I'm stuck on the 2nd boss in Bloodborne, Father Gascoigne. I loved it the minute I started playing it tho, totally hooked. The genuine fear/discovery it has is something I haven't felt in video games for ages. Haven't had the time to invest in playing it more and getting past Gascy though, which is a shame.

Defo going to try DS3.

I find the first 3/4 of Soulsborne games is where the challenge lies at least in terms of character development and against all odds challenges. In both DS2 and BB, at around 75% into the game I felt I crossed a threshold where i 'almost' felt overpowered or at the very least...equal. Maybe it is my playstyle but I do believe almost the further you progress and with the right build, these games arent as intimidating or hard as believed. Ive always said that Souls games arent hard, they are punishing. There is a difference. If youve tried, try again. Throw out all preconceptions you have and go in with a fresh, open mind. Once you 'get it', you will never turn back evrn in the face of all the adversity these games throw at you. Truly brilliant games.

Thanks heaps for the kind words. I'm glad my passion for the series came across. It, like DS2, was one of the best games to critique because it forces you to determine whether the faults lay within you or within the game.

I think that, with the very i-framey roll and the faster pace some of the boss fights push that the Bloodborne influence is very heavy on the combat, but it's still Dark Souls (1) combat at heart.

I'll be very interested to hear what others think about it. I wonder how the live experience will be different, especially because I have a twinked out a****** of a character waiting to invade the s*** out of people for the glory of the Old Wolf of Farron.

not really from what i have seen of it, it looks a bit quicker but it is still dark souls there is no fast side dashing or regain system which is what differentiated bloodborne from dark souls

i haven't watched or read too much this time around, want to play it knowing as little as possible. i have only watched some of the trailers

spook needs his shield, what a gumby lols

I've seen a vid with some quick dashing in it, dunno if it was tied to the weapon moveset or what but there was deffo some dashing going on.

Don't get me wrong I'm not saying it's a bad thing, I get that there will still be shields etc etc but after playing BB, I found it sooo hard to go back to the slower paced combat
and luls spook git gud brah.

Edit* - spook you know the guns are pretty much only for parrying yeh? just pretend that f*****s a shield and get your parry timing down, it's a walk in the park after.

I haven't played DS1/2/3, but as I understand it, the main difference is that Bloodborne has no shield and is a much more aggressive style of combat.

You need to watch them for their attack windups, dodge, then counter-attack. The guns are for parry and riposte moves, so as they're winding up, shoot them, it stuns them, then you can do a mad riposte. Also never attack a group!

There's some good tips, and how it relates/differs from DS here: https://www.vg247.com/2015/03/13/bloodborne-guide-combat-basics-and-advanced-tricks/

Took me a while to figure all that out, and the visceral attack moves!

personally i like a shield and a halberd and just poke away from behind my shield (like a boss)

Most of the blade weapons have 2 modes, generally short and long. For example the saw blade and the hunters axe are in short mode by default, then you can change them into long mode which has a much longer reach.

Sounds like you'd like the hunters axe in long mode or even the cane whip thing.

Took me a while to figure that out also! Made fighting dudes with pitch forks way easier.

I'm using the Kirkhammer which is sweet, cool sword that transforms into a massive stone sledge hammer.

Also there's the regain if you don't know? If you get hit and lose health, you can reclaim it if you land a successful attack on the dude in the next 5 seconds or so.

Actually the Saw Spear is probs up your alley Spook, there's other spears too.

If you want those sweet parries, btw, get the Uchigatana. Parry window on the weapon art is massive, knights have no chance. My recommendation for noobs who need an early game headstart -- get the fire gem as your starting gift, get the uchi off the samurai, get the titanite from the guy where you get the long bow and from next to the giant crystal lizard and bing bang boom you have a Fire Uchi +1 before the second boss.

The problem I find is I forget the mechanics. So after bouts of ungaming, I start playing it and I find myself lost. So it makes my limited gaming time even more frustrating as I've been stuck in the same place for about a year now...

That's the problem with these games which require you to learn their language -- if you let it slip and stop thinking with portals, it can be difficult to get back in the groove.

Finally got a chance to start playing this on the weekend and i love it, don't get me wrong i liked dark souls 2 despite the hate for it

But this just feels like proper dark souls, it feels harder and there are no gay health gems and the like. Makes me really look back to dark souls 2 and realise how much they molly coddled you through that game.

I am interested to see how they tie in some of the straight copy and pasted characters and things from the other games in to the lore to make it make sense ie. The blacksmith Andre or the fire keeper who is the maiden in black from demon souls copied to the point that she practically has the same dialogue - otherwise that aspect will be a bit of a let down

I also don't get the no mimics thing in the thread title, the first chest to came to was a mimic in the room under the dragon
