Nintendo has revealed its third quarter results for 2014, putting financial results to the previous sales revision seen last week that saw the company shift from a projection of 100 billion yen profit to a 35 billion yen loss ($335 million). The company reports a ¥10.2 billion ($99 million) net profit for the first nine months of the fiscal year, but this is a decrease of nearly 30 percent over this time last year.

While the data may seem negative to the producer of Wii U and 3DS, the quarter was still impressive with the three-month period accounting for ¥9.6 billion of the ¥10.2 billion bottom line. The Wii U console is still negatively impacting Nintendo however, according to the company statements. President of Nintendo Satoru Iwata revealed that himself and key members of Nintendo's executive team will be taking temporary pay cuts until June, with Iwata cutting his salary by 50%.

This quarter saw 1.95 million consoles sold, which was a high increase from its previous six month performance of 460,000 consoles, with 966 million software units moved (compared to 630,000 for the trailing half year). Nintendo expects to sell another 390,000 Wii U consoles by the end of its fiscal year on March 31, bringing lifetime sales to just over 6 million, well below its previous 9 million prediction. The holiday haul of nearly two million units helped Nintendo ship three Wii U games that broke the million mark: Wind Waker HD, Wii Party U, and Super Mario 3D World.

In regards to the handheld business, Nintendo is still reaping the rewards of being the top dog, with 5.65 million handhelds sold through the quarter, of which 2.11 million were the new 2DS unit. Nintendo has shipped 42.7 million 3DS units since launch now, over a quarter of the 154 million DS units shipped.

Pokemon has been one of the big factors to help push the 3DS handheld, with combined X and Y sales totalling 11.6 million world wide, a huge feat for the company and IP. Worldwide, Animal Crossing: New Leaf has sold 3.52 million, Mario & Luigi Dream Team is at 2 million, and The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds has sold 2.18 million.
