With overall consumer demand for Nintendo's latest console showing no sign of slowing down. Yeah, in a lot of places it's still almost impossible to walk into a store and buy one. With overall sales of the Nintendo Switch in the region of 4.7 million Nintendo hasn't altered its full-year sales target of 10 million. Even though it easily could.

Instead the company is playing it cool and cautious. Software sales are also impressive, with The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild selling upwards of 3.9 million copies, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe 3.5 millions and the recently released ARMS passing the 1 million sold mark.

And with Super Mario Odyssey on track for release this holiday season, among a number of other games the Nintendo Switch is definitely on track to becoming another success for Nintendo. And, a more enticing product than the company's last home console the Wii U.

~5million is a fairly random number without a comparison. PS4 released in 2013 has sold ~60million, that's ~15/year. So it puts the Switch in close third, probably second to the PS4 (Microsoft hasn't released any data since 2014 on XB1)

Looking at the data by region is really interesting. Japan loves the Switch, 1/5 of all sales is coming from there. 2/5 from "The Americas" and the 2/5 from the rest of the world.

I think the real question is, can they maintain the momentum?

It will take a while for their stable of games to mature and then maybe I will get one then, if it's on special. Good on Nintendo though, doing their thing.

nintendo isn't really competing with anyone so as long as they keep catering to their fanboys they'll do ok.

yeah Super Mario Run on the iPhone was enough of a fanraise for them to move something like over $25million, and all it is apart from a bit of an annoying pissoff is a playable ad for the Switch

Nobody will ever do console like Nintendo. they're like that unique refined buzz you get from the flavour of a good ramen noodle kitchen and they'll never have any real competition because of their carefully curated content and brand in ways that only the Japanese understand how to convey

God damn this is some hardcore fanboyism.

IMO a consoles main objective is to allow game creators to showcase their skills, art, etc and produce a great enjoyable product. By this metric, irrespective of how many units you sell, if the number of games and collective enjoyment is low (i.e there is s*** all to play) then who it's a failed product. Uniqueness is great, but it's not a great metric for much of anything.

I really hope developers get on the switch. Unfortunately it's another Wii, or gamecube, or WiiU.

not really? I don't own a Switch and only if I was pressured to by someone would I even consider it

What I'm getting at is the cradle-to-the-grave sentiment relationship that Nintendo consoles in particular have

i mean for example, this is a great ad. notice the dreamy filmic quality and the sentiment of the 8bit graphics and Nintendo Powerglove
