Which at 21 months out in the wild puts accumulated sales in the U.S. at 8.7 million Nintendo Switch units sold. Which is of course more than what the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One were at after the same amount of time. Earlier in the year we posted that after 10 months on sale it was the fastest selling of all time.

But, before we all start saying that Nintendo Switch sales have slowed since its impressive debut it's worth noting that with the recent releases of both Pokemon and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate - sales of both Nintendo Switch hardware and software are on the up and up. And up. In the U.S. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has become the fastest selling Nintendo Switch game of all time, with over 3 million copies sold in just over 11 days. Impressive. And also understandable considering just how great the game is.

“We are thrilled to see such a strong reaction from consumers in the second holiday season for Nintendo Switch,” said Doug Bowser, Nintendo of America’s Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing on the success of Smash Bros and the Switch. “We’re looking forward to delivering more excitement and smiles to our fans in the coming year and beyond.”

No doubt Nintendo will continue this end-of-year trend in 2019, and with more third-party and indie releases coming every week - no doubt the Switch Success Story is still being written. As to whether or not the Switch will surpass the total lifetime sales of the Wii - probably not. But, it's safe to say that Nintendo's latest hardware outing is definitely a smashing success.

Ahem. #PlaySmash. Also, #MetroidPrime4in2019.
