Another report from the business gurus over at GameIndustry.biz reveals just how popular the Nintendo Switch continues to be -- and how Nintendo's hardware is just about in a league all its own. With sales figures collated from reputable sources the Switch accounted for a whopping 87% of all consoles sold throughout Japan in 2020.

Yeah, impressive. This equates to a 30% increase over 2019 in terms of raw numbers, with 6.85 million new Switches switched on in 2020. compared to the console with the second-most hardware sales, the PS4 and its 543,000 units sold, it makes the competition kind of look like a blip on the radar. And in Japan at least, remind us of the time in the 1980s when Nintendo had the console market on lock.

As for the PS5, sales there sits at over 250,000 consoles sold.

Mirroring the individual game sales data for Australia, the best-selling game in the region was Animal Crossing: New Horizons. Though the mirror stops there as second place goes to Ring Fit Adventure. The only non-Nintendo major 2020 release to crack the top 10 was Final Fantasy VII: Remake from Square Enix at number four. Though even that trailed behind a popular train board game for the Switch.
