You may have caught rumblings of this over the past 12-odd hours or so, but Nintendo have dropped the price of their 3DS handheld unit, only months after it was officially released in the Western market.

Australia is still mildly shafted in pricing overall, but at least it's cheaper than when it was released. Ironically, despite the machine being region-locked, you'd still be better off importing the console and games from the US than buying locally at the moment, given the strength of our dollar, which if the price-drop had occured only here, would have made more sense. But it appears people just aren't flocking to the device, which I'll pinpoint on slow releases of key games and lagging functionality, such as the eShop, which took a long time to be released.
Nintendo announces that effective 12 August, Nintendo 3DS will be available for only SRP AU$249.95. Previously Nintendo 3DS was SRP AU $349.95.

Nintendo Australia plan to offer an exclusive Nintendo 3DS Ambassador Program to consumers who have purchased the Nintendo 3DS at the original launch price. The program will enable those Nintendo 3DS owners to download 10 NES games and 10 Game Boy and Game Boy Advance games for free from the Nintendo eShop.
In spite of our obvious pricing issues here in Australia, news of stuff like the "Ambassador Program" is still good to hear. The North American price-drop, for those interested, was from US$249.99 to US$169.99.

Sucks that buying a US console would mean having to buy US games too :/

Most interesting will be to see what Sony does with the Vita launch prices. Since their originally announced prices were almost bang on those old 3DS prices in all regions.

Wouldn't US games also be cheaper though?

I reckon Sony won't change their price as they will have the benefit of new toy on the market appeal for a few months, it's a sexy looking beast after all.

UK games are cheap as f***, so if they have a similar price drop on the console, you could get a system from there without having to worry about local games not working.

Jeez, $100 drop. That is pretty steep with it only being out for less than 3 months.

Yeah before Zelda came out I was still playing Pokemon White on my 3DS, great console though just slow with the content.
Glad to see Nintendo have recognized those who have already bought the console, I'm excited to get 20 free games xD just got to wait two years for decent ones to come out :P

guess it's not selling too well for such a massive drop.

I'd rather get a free 3DS game, I'm never gonna play NES games or Gameboy games on it.

Too bad it's crappy NES and GB/GBA games they're giving us, not SNES games :(
I'd happily trade 10 NES games for a copy of Secret of Mana and Zelda:LttP.

Anyone know a good site to import a 3DS from? Either from the US or UK.

There was a GBA version of Link to the Past, so there's every chance you could get it for free.

That'd be great, but I seriously doubt it.

For the US they've already announced half of the free GBA titles: Yoshi's Island, Mario Kart: Super Circuit, Metroid Fusion, WarioWare Inc.: Mega Microgame$, and Mario vs. Donkey Kong. A Zelda game seems like a perfect fit with the 25th anniversary stuff going on.

Holy f***, Yoshi's Island? Are you serious? That's f*****g awesome, hands down the best platform game of the SNES. Metroid Fusion was pretty awesome too. That's totally surprising, I was expecting really s***** games. I hope we get the same.

I'd be tempted to buy one purely to play zelda OOT again.

this is pretty much the only reason why I want one, but I cant justify the cost for a single game.

160 for the US console, 250 for AUS. and our dollar is stronger.

f*** you, i'd sooner buy a US console and 20 dollars for an R4 card. then i can stop getting ripped for 50 bucks per game.
