Nintendo, despite having such a thin release schedule for the next few months isn't still without its surprises, overnight unveiling a new hardware entry in the handheld market.

The "2DS" is flattened with a larger top screen and a smaller touch-screen on the bottom. It still features both a D-Pad and thumb slider, but has no 3D slider and is also fixed, so there's no shell casing design -- which has been a Nintendo staple in handheld design for many years.
The Nintendo 2DS retains many of the same hardware features as the Nintendo 3DS including the same Nintendo 3DS gameplay controls, backwards compatibility with the vast existing library of Nintendo DS games, as well as wireless connectivity features such as access to Nintendo eShop as well as StreetPass and SpotPass functionality. However the console takes on a new distinctive fixed, slate form design, and will play all packaged and download Nintendo 3DS games in 2D.
The new handheld is suggested to be more of an entry-level device for younger gamers and comes with a pricepoint to match -- USD$129.

Obviously we haven't heard the local particulars, but as soon as they come through we'll share them with you. The new handheld is scheduled to release on October 12 alongside Pokémon X and Y Versions. Nintendo also confirmed the existence of the earlier-rumouredleaked Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker HD Wii U bundle.

Watch a video introducing the new handheld embedded below.

I don't know if this is a really smart idea to catch the younger audience, or just really bizarre.

Because everything they make isn't already targeted at the younger audience enough already lul

I'd say no, but hey that is just my opinion. Also actually watching that video and seeing people handle it, I can definitely see myself picking one up for Pokemon, Sticker Mario and Animal Crossing. Nintendo may well have a huge system seller on their hands.

Tbh, if I ever played pokemon on the *cough* non-pc version, I'd prefer that cheaper less eye-strainy device, and even thought of buying one before remembering that I'm broke and don't buy things, that's how oddly appealing it is.

I love my 3DS XL, but I could see how this would appeal to parents with younger kids. Especially because you have no option around the 3D stuff as well.

How will this work in games where you need to use the 3D slider to switch between 3D and 2D views to identify game elements? For example, Mario 3D Land?

I can't help but think that this is a tacit admission that people aren't interested in 3D handhelds.

Raven - it's not really necessary. I haven't seen any game that can't be played entirely in 2D, even in Mario its pretty easy to figure out the puzzles without the 3D.

Yeah I'm aware, but that's not what I'm getting at. How many of those sales are due to the 3d capability?

3d has little impact on gameplay and is generally pretty s***** for viewing. I find myself switching it on occasionally for the novelty, but its easier on my eyes to switch it off for long play sessions.

this is going to confuse the hell out of people just like the Wii U did.

If they market it right, it won't be that hard. Tell people that its a lighter and cheaper version of the 3DS, but without the 3D capability. Also it being priced at $148 will easily sway people, especially with it launching on the day Pokemon X and Y is released.

I enjoy my 3DS I think this is more of a ploy to get parents to buy their kids the 'newer' DS version with the new pokemon it looks like it is alot tougher since it doesn't have the flip so more kid proof?

They don't go by lettering. Off the top of my head I think that it went:

1st Edition: Red/Blue
2nd Edition: Gold/Silver
3rd Edition: Ruby/Sapphire
4th Edition: Diamond/Something
5th Edition: Black/White
5.5th Edition: Black/White 2
6th Exedition: X/Y
