That is according to a new report over
at Bloomberg which cites sources close to
Nintendo's plans for the long-rumoured
Nintendo Switch Pro revision. Apparently it will feature a larger 7-inch Samsung OLED screen (
check out this mock-up from our friends at
Press-Start) -- though the handheld resolution will remain 720p.
According to Bloomberg's sources the new displays will head into mass-production in June, in a lead-up to a planned holiday release. Where it gets interesting is the return of talk about potential 4K output when docked and connected to a 4K TV.
Going from 720p to 4K though, yeah that's a massive jump. Though with the Switch powered by NVIDIA's Tegra hardware if there's some new newness under the hood then DLSS-like rendering as seen in NVIDIA's impressive
Shield TV range could be what this is in reference to. As a comparison the current Switch can output at 1080p via the current dock.
Oh and if this bigger-screen Switch is on track for 2021 it's safe to assume that this is the Nintendo Switch Pro that many have been wondering about.
GAME TRIVIA - Did You Know?
Although the
Nintendo Switch isn't strictly a handheld, Nintendo has a long history of refreshing its on-the-go hardware. From the
Game Boy Color to the
Nintendo DSi to the
Nintendo 3DS XL. With the release of the
Nintendo Switch Lite there's definitely room, and precedent, for a more advanced model to hit retail shelves.
