Where the free online gravity train for current online Nintendo Switch games will come to an end. The service, which one can't help but compare to the likes of Xbox Live or PS Plus, will of course be a requirement for online gaming on the Switch. One great feature, currently lacking that will be included, is cloud backup for game saves.
Strangely you'll need to be a subscriber to be able to back-up game saves. Subscription to Nintendo Switch Online is relatively cheap though, costing AU$5.95 / NZ$6.55 for one month, AU$11.95 / NZ$13.15 for three months, or AU$29.95 / NZ$32.95 for a 12 month subscription.
A special Family Membership will allow up to 8 Nintendo Accounts use the Nintendo Switch Online service for AU$54.95 / NZ$60.45 per year.
In terms of freebies, the service will come with Nintendo Entertainment System – Nintendo Switch Online, where classic 8-bit NES titles will be playable both on and offline. Initially 20 games will be included with online functionality for multiplayer - including the likes of Balloon Fight, Dr. Mario, Super Mario Bros. 3, Donkey Kong, Ice Climber, The Legend of Zelda, Mario Bros., Soccer, Super Mario Bros., and Tennis.
Not too shabby, but we would have likes to see a few Super Nintendo titles in there too. All in all, nothing too major from today's announcement, other than confirmation that social functionality including chat will be handled by a separate Nintendo Switch Online App for both iOS and Android devices.
