In a brief statement, Nintendo has announced that CEO and President of Nintendo Co and CEO of Nintendo of America Saturo Iwata has passed away due to a tumour in his bile duct.

The official statement from Nintendo was posted on their site a short time ago.
Nintendo Co., Ltd. deeply regrets to announce that President Satoru Iwata passed away on July 11, 2015 due to a bile duct growth.
Mr Iwata bypassed E3 and a shareholder's meeting to have surgery on the growth late last month. He began his career at HAL Laboratory working on games like Earthbound and the Kirby series before moving to Nintendo in 2000. He became the company's president in 2002, and he became a muppet style puppet in Nintendo's E3 Direct this year.

Yeah, pretty sad news. I had a chance to meet him and Miyamoto in a group interview once and he was really cool. Very passionate, but you could see he was somewhat bound by specific business directives from the board.

I wonder who will be his successor and whether it will change, more over time, the company's direction at all.

Really shocked and saddened by this. :( I didn't even know he was sick. Here's hoping Miyamoto lives a very long, healthy life.
