With the Nintendo Switch Online subscription service offering a suite of NES and SNES games to play, today comes word that a selection of Nintendo 64 and Sega Mega Drive games are coming. Kicking off with the likes of Mario Kart 64, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, and Lylat Wars (aka Star Fox 64) for the N64 and Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and Streets of Rage 2 for the 16-bit Mega Drive.

To access these games you'll need to up your subscription to what's being dubbed the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack -- pricing TBC. Here's a look at the games coming.

Nintendo 64

The Nintendo 64 launch line-up for late October includes: Super Mario 64, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Mario Kart 64, Lylat Wars, Sin and Punishment, Dr. Mario 64, Mario Tennis 64, Operation: WinBack, and Yoshi’s Story. With four-player online Mario Kart 64 confirmed!

With the following titles confirmed as coming soon: Banjo-Kazooie, Pokémon Snap, The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask, Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards, Mario Golf, Paper Mario, and F-Zero X.

Sega Mega Drive

The Sega Mega Drive launch line-up for late October includes: Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Streets of Rage 2, Ecco the Dolphin, Castlevania: Bloodlines, Contra: Hard Corps, Dr. Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine, Golden Axe, Gunstar Heroes, M.U.S.H.A., Phantasy Star IV, Ristar, Shining Force, Shinobi III: Return of the Ninja Master, and Strider.

Very cool to see Banjo Kazooie make an appearance, here's hoping this paves the way for more Rare classics like Blast Corps and Jet Force Gemini. In addition to the above Nintendo are also releasing a pair of special edition classic controllers, though weirdly it's the three-button Mega Drive pad and not the updated six-button one.


Pricing for these have been set to $49.99 USD, so we'll have to wait for local AUD action.

all in all this a very cool announcement, so now we wait to see how these classic games are emulated -- with the N64 being notorious for running at frame-rates well below 30fps in many titles here's hoping we get some smooth 60fps 64-bit gaming.
