Back when the GeForce RTX 3080 launched back in September 2020 and rocked our world, we reviewed the Gaming X Trio version from MSI in addition to NVIDIA’s Founders Edition. And as the ray-traced stars align for the debut of its successor, the GeForce RTX 4080, we’re once again taking a look at both the Founders Edition from NVIDIA and the impressive MSI GeForce RTX 4080 Gaming X Trio.
A snippet.
With its triple-slot design, the MSI GeForce RTX 4080 Gaming X Trio is huge - similar to the GeForce RTX 4090 huge. Weighing in at under 1.9kg the dimensions are 337x140x67 mm, which means you’ll not only need a decently sized PC case to fit it in but you’ll probably need to use the handy support bracket that MSI has packaged in with the GPU. The sheer size of the GPU is the first thing you see when opening the box, and it kind of sets an expectation for some impressive performance. The MSI GeForce RTX 4080 Gaming X Trio delivers, more on that in a bit.
The MSI GeForce RTX 4080 Gaming X Trio look and visual design is an extension of the Gaming X Trio we saw when the GeForce RTX 3080 launched, albeit with several improvements made to the design. From the metal backplate to new and more efficient cooling, fans, and copper plates, the design philosophy is one that definitely leans into the silent side. And it keeps the noise levels down whilst staying cool, with temperatures sitting in the 60-degree range during several benchmarks and stress tests.
