Today at its Windows 10 event, Microsoft revealed a new visor that will serve as its entry point into the world of virtual reality.
In a demo of its newly acquired mega franchise Minecraft, Microsoft showed off how its "Project Hololens" wearable visor will display "holograms" in the user's field of vision. The technology is more akin to augmented reality than virtual reality, but we won't split hairs.
Microsoft also revealed a new app that will let users stream Xbox One games to Windows 10, and that Fable Legends will be coming to Windows 10. Microsoft's Phil Spencer was also spotted wearing a "Battle Toads" t-shirt on stage, causing many a reporter to speculate that a new Battle Toads game is in the works. Microsoft does own Rare, so it's a strong possibility, but Microsoft didn't make an announcement about that franchise today.
With the announcement that Windows 10 will be bringing streaming of Xbox One games to PC, Microsoft's Phil Spencer also confirmed in a later briefing that they are working on making it a two-way street. This, in effect, could open the door to the type of streaming capabilities promised by the Steam Machines, which has yet to deliver.
Finally Microsoft said that Valve's Steam would work with Windows 10, while many collectively thought to themselves, "it damn well better." Gizomodo has some decent in-depth reporting on
Project Hololens here.
