December has marked the first month since the new generation console came out where both the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One had an entire month of data. Microsoft's Larry Hryb a.k.a. Major Nelson has Tweeted out the latest numbers for the December NPD, an it appears things have gone quite well for the Xbox team.

While December was Xbox's best performance, NPD Group’s Liam Callahan paints a slightly different picture when considering the full lifespan of the consoles. "Xbox One led consoles sales in December, while PS4’s two-month total makes it the best selling console during the two-month launch window,” he says.

The best performance though in the hardware platform was Nintendo's 3DS handheld, which saw a large rise in the US during both the December 2013 and 2013 as a whole. "Nintendo’s 3DS topped overall hardware sales for December 2013 and for 2013 as a whole," Callahan says. "However, with its $499.99 price point, the Xbox One led annual hardware sales on a dollars basis."

Nintendo also saw some good news in regards to their flailing home console, the Wii U, with the NPD reporting that December 2013 was its ""highest month for unit sales month so far” according to the NPD data.

Total video game sales for the US in December were up slightly by 2 percent year-over-year, up $3.28B from $3.21B in 2012. Hardware also saw an upswing in 2013, up 28 percent to $1.37B versus the month of December 2012. Continued strong sales of both the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 accounted for a hardware sales increase of "over 50 percent compared to December 2012."
