Microsoft has issued a patch update for Windows 8.1 that addressed the mouse lag users have been experiencing while playing certain games on the latest version of its flagship PC operating system.
Unusually, the patch hasn't been rolled out via the Windows Update system, but as a standalone
Windows Knowledgebase installer kb2908279, intended as a workaround only for some specific games that are known to have been affected by mouse movement freezing and stutter, which include all of the recent Call of Duty games on PC, and a bunch of Valve Software's Source Engine titles.
From the knowledgebase report:
This issue occurs because Windows 8.1 introduced changes to mouse input processing for low latency interaction scenarios. Therefore, games respond to mouse inputs differently in Windows 8.1 than in previous versions of Windows.
A full list of games currently covered by the fix can be
found here, but disconcertingly the official recommendation for any other games users might experience the problem is some rather convoluted registry editing.
The support page also notes that if a game provides a "Raw input" option for mouse control, to use that as a workaround.

-MTG 2014

I don't really care how they deliver the 8.1 update as long as its there.. it did seem counter intuitive to use the store but i suppose they wanted to use it as a way to "introduce" the windows store to people. well at least that's the only thing I can think off that would make them send out an OS update through the store instead of the standard update process.

Actually it's not so bad, just put on Start8 (or any other like utility) and it looks and behaves like Windows7 for most part.
For work it's actually better than Windows8. For games, no, I'm Win7 on my gaming rig.

I couldn't care less about Windows 8 vs Windows 7 or whatever; I got a work machine with 8 and a home machine with 7 (upgrading both from XP at the same time) about a year ago. For me the learning curve has been basically the same. All the dumb Windows 8 stuff (the stupid full screen apps etc) bug you for about 5 minutes on a new install and then you basically never see them again once you've installed all your usual apps.
I never used the start menu once I installed Launchy anyway so I haven't noticed that being missing at all (and frankly if you're clicking on things in the Start Menu after Windows 7, you are a giant gumby mouse using hunt and peck noob for not pressing Windows key and typing the name of the application).
My biggest complaint is that it seemed hard to shut down/reboot, until I figured out Win-C opens some weird side menu thing with a shutdown button, and you Dan recently reminded me that you can always alt-f4 on the desktop anyway like a true keyboard warrior.
(I'd still be happily on XP though if more apps supported it)
