Ahead of the upcoming Windows 8 launch, Microsoft has revealed that the first models of their self-manufactured tablet, the Microsoft Surface with Windows RT, will land in Australia on the same day as the new OS: October 26th 2012 --purchasable via the online store at surface.com.
Surface delivers the power of amazing software and the feel of premium hardware in one exciting experience. Originally unveiled in June, Surface with Windows RT will initially be available in three SKUs: a 32GB version priced at AUD $559.00, a 32GB version bundled with a black Touch Cover priced at AUD $679.00, and a 64GB version bundled with a black Touch Cover priced at AUD $789.00. Prices are GST inclusive.

A variety of accessories will also be available, including Touch Covers in five vibrant colours — black, white, magenta, cyan and red — priced at AUD $139.99 so customers can express their personal style1. Customers will also have the option to purchase a Type Cover in black for AUD $149.99, which adds moving keys for a more traditional typing feel.
Notably, these first offerings feature the Windows RT ARM processor-tailored version of the new OS only, meaning that applications are restricted to those available from the Microsoft Store that run in the tiled interface (formerly known as Metro), and not the traditional desktop UI that can be accessed in the full versions of Windows 8.

For reference, the North American equivalents to the AU$559, AU$679, and AU$789, we're also priced this morning for that region at US$499, US$599, and US$699 respectively --not quite equivalent, but once our %10 GST is factored, perhaps not quite as disparate as usual for new hardware launches such as this.

in five vibrant colours — black

Black is not a vibrant colour.

Firstly, "personal" doesn't mean what they think it means. Maybe if you were able to pick your own custom pattern or something sure. However picking one of 5 generic colours is hardly unique.

Secondly, that's a bit expensive for a keyboard/cover?

I was interested, until I read the wall-gardened bit. More interested in the Intel version that can run current apps, otherwise may as well go a locked-down iPad.

Yeah, I'll wait and see how the Win8 Pro version stacks up.

Yeah, I'm interested in getting one of these, but don't really want the gimped one, I was hoping for the full Windows 8 one.

How many people you think will buy these then realise they can't run x86 apps?

For a tablet...

Isn't Win8 going to be a lot more resource intensive than Android which is based of Linux?

So that means a bigger battery, heavier / more time on the charger...

After their launch bungle, this hasn't been good for Msoft.

I think, an absolute s***-ton.

Even in tech circles the difference is not that well known. I cant imagine what's going to happen with the general public.

Disappointed he didnt do a magician style trick; casually walk over to the desk while he was talking and do the ol switcheroo.

Or tech dude dressed in black sneaking on the stage and doing the swap.

I'm surprised they had a back up.

I think MS should be pretty ready for a BSOD event launch.

With Surface looming, Microsoft fails to explain Windows 8 vs. Windows RT to consumers:

Worth a read. Going to be an interesting launch.

Either way, this is going to shake up the tablet market. I will definitely be looking at the i5 x86 version as a laptop replacement.

they really seem to have been chucking that surface around with not much fear of breakage,

really would be nice if it is half as robust long term

Yeh I was going to get a new tablet this year (my iPad isn't really mine these days) but the thought of a purchase that can also replace my old laptop has me on hold.

Oh man, I didn't realise Windows RT still came with a full x86-looking Desktop Mode (albeit one that doesn't run anything x86), that just seems really silly to me.

MS have made some decisions that I really don't agree with in Windows 8/RT. I would have made RT Metro only and I would have left the option for x86 Windows 8 to have legacy Win7 Start Menu so that it could be used outside of Metro altogether if the user so desired.

Have to wait and see how it pans out in actual use-cases I guess.

certainly looks good, I wouldn't be rushing out to get the first gen one... maybe this time next year they'l have it nailed.

I like the idea of a keyboard, it'll be good to have a play with one of them...
