Scalebound, the game from Resident Evil 2, Devil May Cry, Okami and Bayonetta director Hideki Kamiya, has been cancelled. After being in development for over three years, developer Platinum Games and Microsoft have decided to part ways on the project -- which was rumoured to be in a bit of trouble after its planned 2016 release window was pushed back to 2017.

Microsoft has provided a statement on the cancellation.

After careful deliberation, Microsoft Studios has come to the decision to end production for Scalebound. We're working hard to deliver an amazing lineup of games to our fans this year, including Halo Wars 2, Crackdown 3, State of Decay 2, Sea of Thieves and other great experiences. Scalebound, like other titles from Platinum Games looked to offer up action on a grand scale, with players being able to ride dragons whilst taking on huge bosses. Kamiya was on hand to present that game at E3 2016, showcasing co-op gameplay.

Apparently Scalebound was a passion project for Kamiya, who originally envisioned an early version of the game as far back as 2006.
