Microsoft has today announced a new addition to the Xbox family, this time a media remote for their newly launched Xbox One console that should hopefully help anyone trying to watch Blu-ray movies and getting somewhat frustrated at the Kinect visual and voice commands.
Releasing across Xbox One markets worldwide in early March, the Xbox One Media Remote lets you control video playback for Blu-ray movies and streaming video on Xbox One*. Additionally, there are dedicated Back and OneGuide buttons. The OneGuide button provides one-touch, quick access to your favorite TV shows and movies through the Xbox program guide**. This simple, yet powerful remote is designed to help you listen, watch and switch among experiences instantly.
The remote is also able to control TV and receiver volumes/channels thanks to the Kinect's IR blaster, which (in layman terms) uses IR blasting to send signals to your TV and/or receiver. The remote control features a familiar design with a soft, silicone finish, and will illuminate on motion, making seeing in the dark all the more easier.

Microsoft expects the remote to be shipping sometime during March to Xbox One markets, which includes Australia and New Zealand. A handy .gif has also been posted showing off its lighting action.

Can't you just use the game controller? Surely it'd be able to do everything the media remote does

Probably could Denthor.

I wonder if this will go the same way as the 'xbox 360 media remotes'...
For mine, this product depends on two things,
1) Price point (if it's $50, no f***** way. $20, SURE!)
2) 'interconnectability' ie, can I sync/connect this to a PC? (if not, FFS MS why not?)

If one of the XBone community could chime in, have MS made drivers for the xbone controller in Windows 7 or 8 yet?
(The theory being, simply plug the controller in to a USB port and it's 'not a wireless controller' right?)

no, afaik no compatability for xbox one controllers and windows yet. also, idk if u can buy wired xbox one controllers. also, connecting a usb cable to an xbone or xbox 360 controller does not make it a wired xbox controller. u either have to buy a wired xbox 360 controller, or buy a 3rd party usb wireless dongle to sync a wireless controller too. microsoft used to make wireless dongles but stopped, 3rd party is the only method now. hope that helps :)

Just about any modern HDMI device can do something similar, I control my PS3 with my Samsung TV remote for example.

This does seem like a fairly superfluous device now days though, doesn't MS have a smart phone app for interacting with their consoles?

Check your facts Trex0321.
Xbone 'on tether' doesn't behave the same way as the Xbox 360 w/'play and charge' kit.
(Not if any of the MS marketing for their new and very expensive controller are to be believed anyway)
(Short version the new controller's 'radio' function ceases to transmit when directly connected to the console [apparently].)

Couldn't you use a logitech harmony remote? At least then you'd have the benefit of it controlling damn near everything in your house from the xbox to the tv to your PC to the freaken aircon. I'd still be using mine if it wasn't a broken piece of s*** (illumination turns itself on randomly and the batteries were always flat).

"no, afaik no compatability for xbox one controllers and windows yet."
and
"yet. also, idk if u can buy wired xbox one controllers. "
and
"also, connecting a usb cable to an xbone ... does not make it a wired xbox controller"
