Microsoft has revealing the next in its line of their Windows 8 tailored tablet devices, announcing the Surface Pro 2 at a press event in Redmond overnight (thanks Mass).
As the name suggests, the Surface Pro 2 is a souped up version of the original 10.6" Surface Pro tablet with improved internals, boasting both performance and battery life increases.
Surface Pro 2 is the successor to Surface Pro and, like its predecessor, is a true laptop replacement, capable of running virtually all your Windows software including the full Microsoft Office suite, as well as apps from the Windows Store. Surface Pro 2 offers the portability and simplicity of a tablet when you want it and the power and flexibility of a laptop when you need it. It is powered by a fourth-generation Intel Core i5 processor which, combined with other improvements, delivers increased performance and up to 75 percent longer battery life than Surface Pro.
Surface Pro 2 is gearing up to ship with the new Windows 8.1 OS update in October, and somewhat surprisingly, will be finding its way onto Australian shelves at the same time as North America -- October 22nd 2013.
A blog post from Microsoft Australia executive Tina Flammer confirms local launch pricing for the Surface Pro 2, and it's ARM-based, non-desktop-application-capable counterpart Surface 2:
Why did you only do a story about the Surface 2 Pro and not the Surface 2 as well? I have the original Surface RT and I love it. It has a few problems, but Microsoft have addressed most of them.
Your thoughts on whether or not this would make for a good university laptop? Starting Engineering next year and have been looking forward to getting a Surface 2 for on campus related work (PC @ home).
EDIT: Backlite keyboard!!! Just what I was hoping they would included.
For university work, I'd recommend the Surface Pro 2. You'll want to be able to have a bit more grunt and the ability to install legacy apps or software like autocad and Photoshop.
The Surface 2 I'd recommend as a consumption device like an iPad, but with the ability to do light productivity since it has MS office. I've used the Original Surface RT for a year now, and it hands down trumps the iPad. But I'd recommend the Surface 2 over the RT as the performance is lacking in the RT.
Also, I wouldn't be too worried about apps, a lot of Mainstream ones are being released now. Also, MS announced last week it'll be merging the Windows Phone and Windows 8 Stores together sometime next year. Windows Phone has just about everything.
Forgot to say, maybe wait to see what else comes out. There's a whole slew of new tablets/laptops/hybrids coming for the launch of Windows 8.1 on October 18th. Maybe compare all of those if you can hold out. But i'd certainly recommend a Surface. They're very high quality.
Looks like a sweet rig. I got a new ipad (didn't pay for it shyeah right) and its pathetic treatment of office documents makes it embarrassing. I would never buy one.
This surface pro would be kick ass if not for the price. I just bought a quad core ultrabook for $799. They need to bring their prices down if they want the market share they so desperately crave.

Kind of over the Surface, I thought I'd get one but third parties are making better hybrids imo.

The Surface Pro Type cover is $149
So depending on the cost of the new covers, I'm looking at $1300
That's a big negative.
