The PlayStation 4 isn't the only new generation console suffering hardware issues, with Microsoft's Xbox One reporting that some user's disc drive have been malfunctioning.
According to
CNET, a number of various
YouTube and social media comments are indicating that a small percentage of users are being affected by the disc drive problems, which occur when a user places a disc in the drive and hears a grinding noise. When this occurs, the drive is unable to read the disc but luckily doesn't actually damage said disc.
With 1 million consoles and counting having sold across the 13 countries the Xbox One launched in, Microsoft has responded stating that "the issue is affecting a very small number of Xbox One customers." A full statement can be found below:
We're working directly with those affected to get a replacement console to them as soon as possible through our advance exchange program. Rest assured, we are taking care of our customers. While a replacement console is on its way, we want to ensure our advance exchange customers can stay in the game. We will provide each of them with a free digital download of one of the launch titles published by Microsoft Studios.
Microsoft has also mentioned that those affected will be able to take up an offer of one free game from the launch titles, as a good will gesture from Microsoft. These include Ryse: Son of Rome, Dead Rising 3 and Forza Motorsport 5, which will be provided as a digital download code.
Microsoft has also revealed that in keeping the customer happy, those in need of a replacement console won't have to ship off the broken one straight away. Customers can retain their old console until the replacement one is received, and after that can send off the broken one, allowing you to continue gaming with little downtime.

You have an old screwdriver laying around there, don't you? :P

Pulled the power on it and waited for a bit then plugged it back in and booted it up cold, and then it remembered that I had started to install the game and stopped mid-install (it was listed in my apps as a corrupted install), and I was then able to uninstall and start again, this time just leaving it to do its business. The patch download/installation can take aaaaaaaaaaaaaages, so I just left it, came back when it was done and all was good. Absolutely horrible feedback for the end user though. If you have a bunch of stuff queued up to download, theres not even a screen you can go to to see your queued downloads =\

I get this, I really do.
I think it's interesting that MS are a lot more eager to just shovel launch titles at people to keep them happy too.
Aside from the Foxxcon factory bs have there been any hardware launch issues with the PS4 as yet?
(Not trying to incite a flame-war, just seeking some source to the claims in the OP)

Failure rate is low. It's just that so many people bought them on the same day, and most of the people buying consoles know how to complain on forums.
Graphics cards, motherboards, hard drivers, sound cards - everything in a computer really is just as prone to infant death.
