Film blog Variety
is reporting that Michael Fassbender (Prometheus, X-Men: First Class, Shame) has signed on as the lead in Ubisoft's planned Assassin's Creed movie, and will also co-produce the effort with his production company DMC Film.
According to Variety, the publisher was previously in negotiations with Sony over the license, but has since opted to keep the project close to home with Ubisoft Motion Pictures.
"Michael Fassbender was our first choice" to play the franchise's iconic hooded hero, said Jean-Julien Baronnet, CEO of Paris-based Ubisoft Motion Pictures. "Michael (Fassbender) is an extremely smart, talented, versatile and committed actor."
"We're open to re-discuss with the key studios once the production package is finalized," Baronnet told Variety.
"Whatever the financial model, UMP will limit its risk investment," and will save on production costs by turning to its 26 in-house game studios like Hybride Technologies, to handle visual effects work, Baronnet said.
No details have been provided about which of the game's plots (if any) or characters the movie might follow, but with Ubi keeping the reins on this one, there's at least a better chance of it staying more aligned to its source material than other game to film adaptations.

It's weird, because a while ago they just couldn't quite get the formula right for comic books to movies, but then, they hit it right. Once they got it they never let go of it.
I'm waiting for the same thing to happen to videogames to movies. They've been 'close' to ok at times, but i reckon the formula is just waiting for someone to find it.

Since steam has released it's little movie thing, go ahead and make your own! I don't know if you can seduce Mr Lithgow, but I'm sure you'll find some way to convince him to participate :P

He was in Inglorious Basterds, Prometheus (David) and X-Men: First Class.

Video games movies are really a hit and miss. They have to either convey so much story which is hard for a 2 hour movie on average, or invent story for a game that barely has any background. Just look at Mortal Kombat or Super Mario Bros, while I loved those two movies, the games had no real back story and as such the movies made no real sense.
If a video game to movie could work well, it would be Assassin's Creed because it has so much story already written, and already has factual based events. If they get the casting right, and the setting is appropriate, this could well be the defining video game to movie genre that Skythra is talking about.

The biggest issue will be making the Animus not seem dumb.
How do you not make that look really silly? It's actually way more less convincing than the Matrix or Inception.
Matrix was a computer world. Your brain is plugged in, the conceit of the 'mind makes it real.' Then Inception basically they were drugged and so couldn't get out in time. A mission with consequences of being caught ect.
The Animus, using a computer which lets you live the life of your ancestors, not just view but be in control. So it's computer reconstruction of a real world. It's not time travel. So the notion of DNA memory is silly enough. Let alone it contains enough information to full construction a world and people.
Then even if you get that. Something goes wrong, just reload the world.
If they actually changed it to mind teleporting, that'd be silly also. Open up a whole can of worms with time travel paradoxes.
So they better be clever and they better adapt this for Film.

But wouldn't he then be completely clueless? The whole premise of Assassin's Creed is to learn something from the past, while Quantum Leap was (as I recall) to set something right, using knowledge from the future. I don't think that setup would work, and I certainly don't trust Hollywood to make that big of a change to yet another video game movie.

I don't know a great deal about the movie biz, but to me it seems like a similar setup to how Marvel have now been producing their own comic book films, and as we've seen with Iron Man and Avengers, that has worked out very well with some terrific movies that are very faithful to the source material.
With Ubi financing an AC movie themselves, it leaves creative control with the people that know their s***, so I'm hoping the same thing will happen here.
