The weirdly titled AM2R (which stands for A Metroid 2 Remake) is a fan project that has been around for a number of years now, where the goal was to recreate the Game Boy's Metroid 2 in the vein of Super Metroid for the SNES and Metroid: Zero Mission for the GBA. Having just reached version 1.0, a number of fans have been celebrating the return to the Metroid of old. Until of course, cease and desist letters starting arriving at sites that were hosting the project.

Naturally, with torrents and such it's not that hard to find a copy of AM2R. A fan project that just about lives up to the years of promise with a look and feel that pretty much succeeds in emulating the 16-bit classic. And we can't really fault Nintendo for taking a stand against remakes or remasters of its own intellectual property.

All we can do is re-iterate to them how much we love Super Metroid and Metroid Prime. And that we needs more of this type of thing and less of whatever Metroid Prime: Federation Force is. Actually, that kind of looks like a co-op Metroid Prime, so it might be pretty awesome.

Here's a look at AM2R from YouTuber GameXplain.

As you can see AM2R is the sort of fan project that exists based on a deep love for a property. And the fact that it turned out to be a good Metroid game, is pretty impressive.
