Originally scheduled to take place on the weekend of August 22-23, Australia's largest esports event - the Melbourne Esports Open - has been postponed. This year was to be be the event's biggest showing to date with Intel Extreme Masters (IEM) Melbourne making its debut. Postponed due to the current situation means that both the MEO and IEM will return in next year.

With planning for the event already underway.

ESL SVP Asia-Pacific Japan, Nick Vanzetti said, "While there’s no doubt fans were looking forward to attending Melbourne Esports Open in 2020, we’ve made the decision to postpone the event by a year in light of the current global health situation. We can’t wait to showcase an even bigger weekend of esports at Melbourne Esports Open 2021."

In terms of local esports, the 2020 League of Legends Oceanic Pro League (OPL) Grand Final will still take place in August - with Riot Games set to reveal details in the coming weeks.

And finally, those that have purchased Melbourne Esports Open 2020 and Intel Extreme Masters 2020 will be pleased to know that those digital stubs will be valid for the 2021 event - with refunds available for those that won't be able to make it.
