Sony's PlayStation 4 continues to hold onto the console sales lead in the US, beating out Microsoft's Xbox One in the NPD Group's May results breakdown
via GamesIndustry.
For overall hardware sales May 2014 saw an increase of 95 percent, pushing it past May 2013 to a whopping $187 million profit. While most of that growth can be attributed to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One sales, Wii U and Vita sales also grew year-over-year.
"Two examples of hardware bundles that helped to drive hardware sales in May 2014 include Mario Kart 8 bundle for the Wii U, and the Borderlands 2 bundle for the PS Vita," NPD analyst Liam Callahan said.
Software sales continued to scale high, jumping up 57 percent year-over-year to a nice $247 million mark, breaking the past six month decline. Callahan attributed the increase to new launches Watch Dogs, the impressive Mario Kart 8, Wolfenstein: The New Order, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and Kirby: Triple Deluxe among others. Ubisoft's Watch Dogs took hold of the number one spot, with Nintendo's Mario Kart 8 trailing behind at second place followed by MLB 14: The Show, Wolfenstein and Minecraft.
“Collectively, May 2014 launches sold 800 percent more in dollar sales than May 2013 launches did their respective launch months. New launches represented 50 percent of dollar sales this month, which compared to only 9 percent for new launches in May 2013," commented Callahan.
