Last week the
Entertainment Software Association or
ESA announced that the big three -
Microsoft,
Nintendo, and
Sony - have come together to agree on a new policy that will see all games with paid-for loot boxes disclose the odds of potential items contained within. A move that drew support from all of the big publishers including
EA,
Ubisoft,
Bethesda,
Activision Blizzard, and
Take-Two.
Following on from this
Epic Games, the publisher behind both
Fortnite and
Rocket League, has noted that loot box transparency will exist across its entire portfolio. Which would mean that potential buyers will get to see what's inside before laying down cash. This was seen in the Fortnite: Save the World event from earlier in the year.
In a statement made to
GamesIndustry.biz, Epic notes, "Earlier this year, the Fortnite Save the World team made a change that showed players every item that they would get in a paid llama before opening it." Adding, "Going forward, we're committed to the same transparency for player purchases in all Epic Games titles."
This industry-led change to the way loot boxes are handled in-game is a definite step in the right direction.
