The 2020 range of OLED displays from
LG were notable in more ways than one -- ushering in the age of HDMI 2.1, VRR, G-Sync, FreeSync, and low response times. Stuff usually associated with PC displays aimed at gaming. As per our reviews of the
LG CX 48-inch and
LG CX 65-inch its a display perfect for the new
Xbox Series X,
PlayStation 5, and PC powered by the latest
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080. At CES 2021, LG announced its plans to push OLED even further.
LG OLED displays for 2021 will come in three variants Z1, G1, C1, and A1 series -- with the Z1 series offering 8K at 88 and 77 inches respectively. No doubt the price point there is more "for Cashius MoMoneyius only" -- but the G1 series is set to feature the Evo panels which ramp up the brightness to essentially eliminate the one area where OLED panels can seem to fall behind the competition.
The C1 and A1 represent the more mainstream (read: affordable) options with the return of the 48-inch and LG noting that it is even planning to launch a 42-inch OLED sometime this year. A size that sees the range go even more PC-friendly, with the release of the 48-inch model in 2020 proving to be a highly sought after display for high-end PC gamers.
Building on this game focus for LG comes word that in addition to LG being the official display partner for the Xbox Series X (thanks to its inclusion of 4K 120 Hz and FreeSync) the 2021 models will offer a blazingly fast 1ms response time. Meaning that, yeah, the LG OLED this year can effectively double as a kick ass esports display. With all of its game-focused features LG is introducing a new Game Optimiser across all its 2021 webOS displays (which includes the new QNED Mini LED displays coming and the revamped NanoCell TVs) which will adjust the picture depending on the style of game being played and offer up game-specific settings and modes to tinker with. Very cool.
Plus, the latest version LG's impressive Alpha processor -- which is starting to sound like the DLSS of the TV world.
The latest LG intelligent processor, the α (Alpha) 9 Gen 4 AI, revamps the performance on the newest LG OLED TV models in the Z1, G1 and C1 series, LG QNED Mini LED TV models QNED99 and QNED95 and LG NanoCell TV models NANO99 and NANO95. The processor leverages deep learning to enhance upscaling, making lower quality content look amazing on the large, self-emissive displays. The LG processor features AI Picture Pro, which recognises onscreen objects such as faces and bodies and distinguishes between foregrounds and backgrounds, processing each object independently to make images look three-dimensional. With its ability to detect content genre, the α9 Gen 4 processor further optimises picture quality, amount of light in scenes and ambient conditions in various viewing environments.
