After revealing plans to bring the Xbox One Kinect to Windows last year, starting today Microsoft has opened up pre-orders for the device, though in limited quantity.

The Kinect for Windows v2 is priced at $199 and will start shipping in July. Compared to its predecessor, the new sensor includes the ability to pick up an expanded depth of field, increased skeletal tracking, and 1080p video capture--essentially what's currently available in the Xbox One version.

If this sounds like your kind of tech, you can head over to the official pre-order page for more info. For those wanting access to the SDK and not the actual Kinect, Microsoft has noted that a public beta will begin sometime in July 2014 so sit tight for more info soon.

And how exactly would this integrate into Windows? Aside from being an expensive webcam what does it offer?

They are used a lot for virtual reality projects, such as with the Virtuix Omni, you can use it to map to characters in PC games such as Garrys Mod. Epiphany Games used two Kinects combined to make a really cheap motion capture studio (The Aussie Studio Using Kinect Hacks For Low-Cost Motion Capture).

The low cost of the components combined with existing drivers has meant the kinect has been widely used in robotics ranging from hobbyist levels to professional prototypes. (Top 10 Robotic Kinect Hacks).

I saw one piece of software that lets you scan 3d things and bring them into 3d studio or autocad. Good for digitizing your house or to scan small stuff to replicate with a 3d printer

They've been used in operating theatres where the surgeons can use hand gestures to swap out x-rays/scans on a monitor whilst operating. Similarly the viewports on 3D navigation systems used for neuro surgery can be manipulated (zoom rotation etc.) in the same way to get different perspectives of the patient's mapped skull. The potential for these things in many areas is exciting.
