In a recent investors meeting, Nintendo President, Satoru Iwata, assured those assembled that the Wii U would not lag behind competitors in the visual department like the Wii did, though he did recognise that the Wii U was in no way in the same power league as Microsoft of Sony's efforts due in part to keeping costs low for the Wii U and controller bundle, which is essentially two hardware devices.
"We cannot promise that the Wii U will never be excluded from multiplatform software," he told investors. "But we can at least assure you that the Wii U will not have such a big difference as the Wii had in comparison to how, on other platforms, developers could expect very different graphic capabilities of generating HD-applicable high-resolution graphics.
"Other companies might launch a next-generation console with more power, but we don't necessarily think that the difference between the Wii U and such console will be as drastic as what you felt it was between the Wii and the other consoles because there will be fewer and fewer differentiators in graphics," he added.
"Naturally some consumers are very sensitive about such a small difference in graphics so that we will make efforts to make the most of the performance of the Wii U to keep up with technological innovations and not to make the system out-of-date soon."
He then went on to add that the Wii U could be construed as two separate hardware devices and that if they're "not careful", they "could end up having to offer the price of the two hardware systems combined". This, in Nintendo's eyes is would "not be an acceptable price for the consumers".
On the online front, he also went on to answer questions about profitability for their online service, assuring investors that at this stage they are "not considering asking our consumers to pay periodic subscription fees", but that through the Miiverse application, he can foresee a growth in consumer-awareness of other Nintendo products, thus bolstering the potential for more software sales.
"We are going to make it so that more software can be sold through the services and that we are making preparations with the belief that results worthy of our investments can be achieved eventually," he said.
Iwata also confirmed that any future hardware releases from Nintendo would work with Nintendo Network.
The full investor meeting transcript is a meaty one, but one well worth reading if you're a Nintendo fan, or eagerly wanting more Wii U information.
