With
Intel technology set to power the
2020 Tokyo Olympics via on-the-ground 5G, 3D Athlete Tracking tech, real-time stats tracking and overlays, VR Training, and a number of other initiatives being worked on with the
International Olympics Committee - the company is also bringing esports to the sporting event via the
Intel World Open tournament.
Although not officially an Olympic Sport (yet) the Intel World Open will occur in the lead up to the big show with the finals taking place in Tokyo from July 22-24. The two titles chosen for players around the world to compete in are Capcom’s
Street Fighter V and Psyonix’s
Rocket League. Online qualifiers are set to commence in early 2020 which will be open to all players to compete for their chance to join their national team.
The qualifiers will then take place in Katowice, Poland, in June 2020 - and from there the teams chosen for the championship tournament will be heading to Tokyo. Which, in an awesome move, will take place at the Zepp DiverCity venue in the heart of the Olympic Games area. The total prize pool is set at $500,000 USD - split evenly across both Street Fighter V and Rocket League.
This event builds on Intel's previous Olympic season esports tournament - where Intel Extreme Masters PyeongChang took place ahead of the 2018 Olympic Winter Games.
