As part of the big 15-minute Starfield gameplay presentation the other day we got glimpses at dialogue scenes played out in first-person - ala classic Bethesda Game Studios RPGs like Skyrim and Fallout 3. The studio's most recent game, Fallout 4, went with a fully voiced protagonist and a Mass Effect-style dialogue wheel. In Starfield it's out with the new and in with the old.
Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil 3 and Resident Evil 7 biohazard just got a big next-gen patch for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and PC supporting ray-tracing, high frame rate and 3D audio. All of the above are new for the PS5 and Xbox Series X versions of the games with ray-tracing coming to all three on PC.
Well, there's some dinosaurs in there, too, thanks to an update on Capcom's forthcoming dino horde mode shooter, Exoprimal, but other than that and some obligatory arcade collections, the key focus for this year's Capcom Showcase as part of Summer Game Fest is squarely on Monster Hunter and Resident Evil.
Which is to say, Dying Light 2 Stay Human will get its first bout of additional gameplay content as part of the mammoth five year plan the studio revealed in its long term vision for the game. There's also a fan-requested Photo Mode in tow, and all of this is part of free update 1.4.0 which drops today-ish.
From the same studio behind the critically acclaimed and much-loved Cloudpunk, comes Nivalis, a life-sim set in the same stunning voxel-art cyberpunk world. Nivalis serves up a chance for players to dive deep into the game-universe created by developer ION LANDS, while learning just what it takes to reach the heights of its neon metropolis.
The annual Xbox & Bethesda showcase is easily one of the biggest productions of the year, and this year we got a stacked 90-minutes of gameplay reveals, announcements, and first-looks at games coming to Xbox and PC over the next 12 months. Sure, there was no Fable or even Avowed, with Xbox instead choosing to focus on games on the more immediate horizon. And with that there was still plenty of room for excitement, namely with Starfield getting a full 15-minute deep-dive.
If none of that headline grabbed you, you might want to move along. If it did, welcome to the tentacled party, dear cultist. We'll be your helpful guide here through the stunningly hand-crafted world of The Last Case of Benedict Fox from developer Plot Twist, coming to PC and the Xbox family of devices in 2023.
"I invite you to join me as we explore Scorn's mesmerising labyrinth of odd forms and sombre tapestries," says Doug Bradley, who played the iconic Pinhead in the Hellraiser films. Scorn, a living love-letter to H.R. Giger, is a shooter with a difference that goes beyond the standout aesthetic of the aforementioned late artist and challenges players to absorb a living, breathing space where nothing is as it seems.
Well, on an alien planet to be exact. Lightyear Frontier got announced at the Xbox & Bethesda Showcase earlier today and it's all about farming alien crops and exploring a vibrant and mysterious planet in your trusty mech. A mech that is purpose built for farming, as seen in the very charming trailer.
Minecraft is one of the most popular games of all time, and as we've seen with the recent action-RPG spin-off Minecraft Dungeons it's a world and setting ripe for creativity. Minecraft Legends is the latest game in the franchise, and it's described as "an all-new action strategy game" from Mojang Studios and Blackbird Interactive.
And if we're being honest, this project could go either way. At their very best, both Rick and Morty and Solar Opposites from Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon can be brilliant, but they can also have flat spots and be so inside, that jokes just fly past the every day viewer.
But we know they love games, and with Justin Roiland using the successes of the aforementioned to create a game development studio in Squanch Games, we're definitely very interested in this, the studio's newest title, High on Life.
Ark 2 got its first reveal a year or so ago where it was revealed that not only will Vin Diesel play a character in the game, but he's joined Studio Wildcard as 'President of Creative Convergence'. Based on today's impressive Unreal Engine 5 reveal we can only assume one of his first presidential decrees was "Yo, I want to ride a T-Rex into battle".
Microsoft Flight Simulator is celebrating its 40th anniversary, making it both Microsoft's oldest franchise still in development and one of the longest running in game history period. To celebrate this milestone a number of historical planes have been added today (including the Wright Flyer and Ryan NYP “Spirit of St. Louis”) alongside one from the distant future - the Halo Infinite Pelican.
And, I don't know... if you've read some of the news of late about AIs and transcendent intelligence and humans being sympathetic to that and cover ups and a new age dawning, then maybe, just maybe, this game -- a "fully-fledged remake" of the classic System Shock -- might be a bit too on-the-nose.
Diablo 4 is coming in the first-half of 2023, and with the latest look at the game (including the fifth and final class, the Necromancer) it's shaping up to be one of the biggest releases of the year. But, with the recent release of the free-to-play Diablo: Immortal on mobile and PC, the recent controversy surrounding that game's monetisation is currently casting a shadow on Diablo 4.
Xbox Game Studios and Kojima Productions are working together to create "a video game for Xbox like no one has ever experienced or seen before leveraging the power of the cloud". No details other than that were provided by Hideo Kojima made an appearance at the Xbox & Bethesda Game Showcase earlier today to make the announcement.
From Obsidian and game director Josh Sawyer Pentiment is a new "16th-century narrative adventure" coming to Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Xbox Game Pass this November. The art-style and presentation for this one is striking, taking on the form of manuscripts, prints, and other pieces of art and history come to life.
One thing to take note of in the trailer and announcement for Forza Horizon 5's first expansion Forza Horizon 5: Hot Wheels is that it's "all in game 4K footage", a testament to just how gorgeous the open-world racer is on Xbox Series X|S and PC. And yeah, adding giant Hot Wheels loops and tracks to Horizon's digital Mexico is a sight to behold.
