It's not only one of the most critically acclaimed games in years but Elden Ring is also one of the most successful. After a year out in the wild Edlen Ring sales have now surpassed 20 million copies worldwide - making it one of the most popular games of all time. And we've finally got confirmation that the game's first major expansion Shadow of the Erdtree is in development.

But that's pretty much all we know, with the announcement simply confirming that the expansion is currently in development alongside presenting some very cool artwork.

More Elden Ring in any form is exciting, and it's great to see From Software and Bandai Namco calling this an expansion as opposed to DLC. An expansion means something meaty, and there's no doubt this will be huge when it launches - hopefully sometime in 2023.

YouTube channel 64 Bits is all about creating little demake videos, modern titles as they might have looked on older hardware. With authentic visuals, sound effects, and recreating iconic scenes and moments the latest game to get the demake treatment from the team is Elden Ring. As envisioned as a 16-bit SNES game, it looks like a long lost JRPG from the era.

And with the Mode 7 effects, and awesome sprite versions of Elden Ring bosses, we'd definitely play through this if it were real. With shades of Secret of Mana and Terranigma, here's Elden Ring for Super Nintendo.

For more on Elden Ring be sure to check out our massive review, or you know, fire it up and give that boss another go - maybe this time you'll make it through in one piece.

A new Tekken 7 mod by Ultraboy (which you can download) puts characters from Elden Ring into the popular fighting game, and the results are spectacular. It includes Melina, Malenia, the Prisoner Tarnished, Radahn Counqerour of the stars, Alexander the pot, and even the giant Lobster.

Check it out.

And download it here. It's so good that Katsuhiro Harada, producer and director of Tekken, calls it a "ridiculously well-made mod".

Originally posted as a review in progress, our jaunt through From Soft's critically received Elden Ring has culminated in a dominant near 100-hour level of investment, incidentally leading us to level 150 in the game. So, you know, we know a little bit about it at this point...

And that point is that in that time, we've finally seen the credits, but know also that this isn't over, by any measure. At least that's what we've gleaned from our very own Joaby who took up review duties.

Here's a snippet from his final, definitive submission:
When you're level 150, like I am, it's not that big a deal to take him down, halting framerate or not. But for those looking to use him as an early injection of souls, the frame stutter issue can make him damn near impossible.

For many, this will be the legacy of Elden Ring. The bargain you make with From Soft when you play a Souls game is simple — you trade your willingness to accept and learn from your own shortcomings in return for a game that will never cheat you out of victory. But Elden Ring, at least on launch, doesn't hold up its side of the bargain. It's not often, and it didn't stop me from finishing the game — the frame hitching never happened during any main path boss fights, for example — but I was cheated out of some runes, and that's all there is to it.

It's been the talk of the town ever since it was revealed, and we've been all over it thanks to our resident Souls-like genre and From Software expert, Joab Gilroy. But in taking on review duties its been revealed that the game is too big for the review period which he's been afforded ahead of embargo, and so today we present to you instead, a review in progress.

Here's a snippet:
The good, however, especially if you're a Dark Souls fan, is everything else. I mean everything. Because it's an open-world Dark Souls game. It's a Souls approach to an open-world, too, where the landmarks don't show up until you've actually visited them — and a map that won't show up until you've literally found a map piece.

The bosses are fantastic, and while I think George R. R. Martin's impact amounts to a few 'ye olde' word choices, the storytelling is surprisingly coherent. There's a wonderful throughline to it that you can follow, and while the game itself doesn't breadcrumb players all that well, the story carries its weight in that regard.

The variety is pure Dark Souls. I mentioned my colleagues' builds, but we barely scraped the surface of what was possible. Faith-based miracles are there, with all the classics showing up, but so are "God-slayer" incantations and "Dragon" incantations. Sorceries too, with I assume many varieties — but I never got to see them all because I accidentally killed the person who sells them.

February has been an absolutely massive month for games, from Dying Light 2 to Horizon Forbidden West to the excellent Total War: Warhammer III. But, it's not over yet as February 25 sees the arrival of Elden Ring, the epic action-RPG from the the studio behind Dark Souls and Game of Thrones creator George R. R. Martin.

And as we're talking about days before it drops, here's a lengthy deep dive and Elden Ring overview from publisher Bandai Namco.

It's a big one, it goes through the story, the combat, and the impressive scope of the Legacy Dungeons you'll visit. No doubt this is shaping up to be an epic release, as we discovered in our recent hands-on where our trusty Souls-pert Joab Gilroy "killed the biggest goddamn dragon I have ever seen in any game".

We're not far off from the review window proper, and then the retail launch of many a hardcore gamer's most anticipated release of 2022, FromSoftware's Elden Ring. But ahead of that fateful date, we were granted access to a handful of hours with the game in preview form once again, this time off restrictions and free to roam as we saw fit.

And by "we" I mean our resident Souls expert and trusted contributor, Joaby, who kicked the tyres once more for us in glorious fashion.

Here's a snippet:
I cut down a giant lumbering mausoleum, which offered me the opportunity to do something called a "Remembrance Duplication", and I never worked out what that meant. I bought something called a Note: Land Squirts which sounds like what you'd get if George R R Martin overwrote the concept of toilet paper.

And I killed the biggest goddamn dragon I have ever seen in any game. And I don't think I was supposed to. I saw what looked like a tall white tower off in the distance and as I rode towards it, I realised it was the spiny first finger of a dragon god's wing. I spent 10 minutes chopping it in its tail while it slept just to see if I could, and it worked. It died, and it gave me so much XP and so many Dragon hearts that I instantly worried that I'd made a grave error...

With early access to the Elden Ring Network Test we sent our resident Dark Souls expert to check out From Software’s latest, Joab Gilroy. Even though the open-world RPG, created in collaboration with Game of Thrones author George R. R. Martin, is currently one of the most anticipated games on the horizon ol’ Joab was a little sceptical about the transition to a more open... world. He’s basically the Dark Souls of Dark Souls fans.

A snippet.
It's an open world Dark Souls game, which at first blush might not be that appealing. Dark Souls' level design is a very particular thing, and generally the few times the series has attempted to broaden an area it's seen mixed results. Swamps are the worst thing about every Dark Souls game (except for the Bed of Chaos), and coincidentally they feature the series' broadest level design. There's something about the narrow, focused approach that has always worked for the Souls games.

So I was sceptical at first, and I immediately noticed its impact. It initially feels, well, overlarge and empty, and I struggled to find anything to fight. After the initial tutorial area — which is completely skippable, by the way, bearing nothing of any use and not enough souls to be worth the time — you're thrust into the main world, given the opportunity to go wherever you want, but instinctively I headed straight ahead. That's a mistake. The giant, horsebound Tree Sentinel Knight will mess you up, and once you sneak past him it can be tough to find a decent fight in his direction.

That's the tricky part of Elden Ring. Souls games are about training your instincts. The series has spent dozens of hours getting you to form a muscle memory, but you need to reject that impulse to find success in ER. You need to draw from a different well — to win at Elden Ring, you need to think like Skyrim.

As a part of a new update outlining the specs for the highly anticipated Elden Ring, which is coming to PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S, publisher Bandai Namco is listing ray-tracing as a feature coming via a patch. Presumably post-launch, the feature is coming to the PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X versions.

Where on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S a 60fps performance mode will also be supported. At up to 4K, with the Xbox Series S limited to 1440p. Bandai Namco notes that with the performance mode "there are differences in the display of grass and other ground objects depending on the console".

On the non-technical side, some more Elden Ring goodness arrives in the form cross-gen compatibility for saves. Albeit PlayStation saves will only be supported when jumping from the PS4 version to the PS5 version.

Elden Ring is out February 22, 2022.

A lengthy new gameplay preview for the highly anticipated Elden Ring has dropped, and it's massive open-world RPG meets Dark Souls action looks impressive. Which is to be expected, though it's still pretty incredible that FromSoftware is putting together an experience with such scope.

From the melee combat to the spells to the co-op and the little things like being able to put together your own map of notable points of interest -- it's a refreshing take on what we think of when it comes to open-world adventures.

Naturally there's boss battle stuff in here, which will make Souls-fans very happy to see. Stay tuned to AusGamers as we'll be going hands-on with Elden Ring very soon.

Elden Ring is out February 22, 2022 for PC, Xbox, and PlayStation platforms.

Elden Ring is the latest from FromSoftware's Hidetaka Miyazaki's, and a fantasy RPG created in collaboration with Game of Thrones creator George R.R. Martin. So yeah, it goes without saying that the hype for this one is real. Originally slated for a January 2022 release today comes word that the launch has been pushed back to February 25, 2022.

Where it will make its debut across PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and PC. With the team taking to social media to confirm that "the depth & strategic freedom of the game exceeded initial expectations" the delay sees the game's launch pushed back by a month.

The good news is that from November 12-15, Elden Ring will be conducting a Closed Network Test/Beta -- though as to what that will include remains a bit of a mystery. On the account of the description stating that it will be "a pre-verification test for the completion of the commercial version of the game". Either way it's a chance to check out Elden Ring before launch, so be sure to head to the sign-up page to register your interest.

Interestingly the new release date puts Elden Ring's release date on the same day as the Saints Row reboot and a week after Horizon Forbidden West. Yeah, February 2022 is stacked.
