It's no secret on this website that we love Resident Evil 4. Not just for its own awesomeness, but for how it impacted and ultimately reshaped the third-person action and survival horror experience for the better. But what happens when someone decides they're going to try and top the OG with an all-new "Remake" of where it all started?

Given Capcom's most recent reputation in this space, the answer might surprise you. Here's a snippet from our in-depth analysis of Resident Evil 4 Remake:

Oddly, the fact the game’s mechanics, setting and new beasties, alongside its redefined presentation, all contributed to an edge-of-our-seats experience where the lack of any overly dragged-on storytelling only helped proceedings, is one of those incidental things that can only happen in games. (And where many transmedia snobs might possibly miss the mark on the point of games at all.) So the idea here is a poignant one -- that the game’s original creator hoped its remake team would build on the things he and his team couldn’t, because many of us feel Resi 4’s story is about as perfect a summary of the silliness of the series as you can get, while also capitalising on the definition of survival horror and what it means to both be and deliver that “sinister” adjective dropped earlier.

Sometimes the best horror is not lore-laden, it’s just visual blunt force trauma you’re forced to deal with, and try to extrapolate from later...

As it did with Resident Evil Village, publisher-developer Capcom has dropped a playable demo for the hotly-anticipated Resident Evil 4 Remake, available to play now on PC, PS4, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S and has no limits as to how many times you can play through it.


The amazingly-titled Residet Evil 4 Chainsaw Demo is set to deliver a hearth-thumping run at the game's first major village (heh) encoutnter, inspired by the first game's mobbing moment when Leon happens upon a settlement burning one of his Police escorts in the village centre.

We hope the Chainsaw Demo prepares fans for the horrors that await when Resident Evil 4 releases on March 24, 2023 for PlayStation®5, PlayStation®4, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam. In addition to the Standard Edition, Resident Evil 4 launches with a digital “Deluxe Edition”. The Deluxe Edition features additional in-game content, including costumes, weapons, a treasure map, and more. Those who pre-order the Standard Edition will receive in-game rewards, including the “Attaché Case: Gold” and “Special Charm: Handgun Ammo,” while pre-orders of the Deluxe Edition also include the “Attaché Case: Classic” and “Special Charm: Green Herb” items. These customization items offer specific in-game abilities when equipped.

We wait with baited breath for the game's release proper, but for those champing to be sawed in half, you can do that right now.

Game Informer has posted an extended gameplay clip from the upcoming Resident Evil 4 Remake, showcasing Chapter 5 which is after Leon meets Ashley. Running on Capcom's latest tech it looks very impressive, though the rain effects are a little weird in how pronounced they seem. The action though is the highlight with new takedown moves and what looks to be a faster pace for Leon's movement.

Fans of the GameCube original will notice a lot of similarities and differences. The video features commentary and there's mention of expanded areas and regions in addition to quality of life updates.

Resident Evil 4 is coming to PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, on March 24 2023.

Not discounting any other entries in Resident Evil over the years, but as with anything with the sort of cut through and longevity that this series has, you're gonna take the good with the bad and judge the middling for yourself. Unless you're talking about Resident Evil 4, of course. And in today's Resident Evil Showcase Capcom reminded us just why this entry is so beloved.



Above is a new trailer for Resident Evil 4 Remake, which features a number of gameplay updates and narrative reshuffles, just to bring the game into modernity. But as producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi explains it, the team has also been careful not to go overboard on its reimagining of the seminal gaming experience, trying to stay true to the original release as much as possible (which that trailer highlights).

Chief among the obvious updates though, is atmosphere. While RE4 is a survival horror masterclass, it is also an action game in equal measure. With today's Resident Evil Showcase gameplay demo what we saw was a renewed focus on darkness and horror and that sense of isolation and of being out of your depth with the odds stacked against you. And on RE Engine, Resident Evil 4 Remake looks to be taking its lighting game to an all new level. In addition to the new trailer above, watch the Resident Evil Showcase in its entirety below. Resident Evil 4 Remake is coming to PC, PS4, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S March 24, 2023. Also, anyone with the PS4 edition of the game will be able to update that to a digital version of the PS5 game for free, according to Capcom. Pre-orders for the game are now open with a Standard Edition, a Deluxe Edition and a Collector's Edition available.
