Roller coaster and theme park simulators have been around for quite a while now, but it's the release of Planet Coaster that has fans of the sub-genre more excited than they have been in years. With its level of freedom and creativity akin to something like Cities: Skylines, Planet Coaster looks pretty incredible. And if you love the idea of creating your own theme park, packed with roller coasters, mascots, and thrill-rides, you'll probably want to check this out.
Bought this. Have been playing RCT a lot lately and judging by the buzz surrounding this game it seems like a winner.
When I was little I used to get big pieces of cardboard and design my own theme parks on them. When Theme Park first came out I was utterly mesmerized by it. Now look where we are.
It has a complex system for customizing the way things look but it lacks game play. I loaded up the first mission, started looking at the controls and items and the mission completed. It's literally no challenge at all. The cash just pours in, even when I tried to build I was unable to spend the cash faster than it was coming in. It's a fine sandbox game if that's what you want but I'm more into the management side of Tycoon games that the aesthetics and it is very shallow in that regard, so it's not for me.
You tried the first mission and refunded it because it was too easy?
The extra missions and challenges really throw some nifty problems at you to solve. One of the beginner missions is a small theme park where a Monolith has arrived and all your rides break down more often than normal.
That being said the game is heavily invested on the aesthetics and design side of things and hasn't really expanded too much on the tycoon/management gameplay over previous theme park sims & tycoons.
It's a gorgeous game though and there is some amazing attention to detail on some smaller things that you discover while playing and get a little "oh neat!" or "wow, that's cool" moment. The best addition is the Steam workshop integration and some of the stuff people are putting up on there is just amazing.
