Which sees Japanese studios Tha ltd and Enhance team up for what looks like Lemmings but with hordes of people. The debut trailer for Humanity does very little other than showcase the inherent weirdness of crowds of people moving - and that might just be the point.
According to Yugo Nakamura, of Tha ltd, "The inspiration for our game Humanity came from thinking of how a transcendental being would interpret “human-like” behaviour, in the same way we humans interpret bird flocking with Boids." Which is an algorithm that explains the individual behaviour of a bird within a flock broken down into simple reactions or movements.
I began to imagine a “human behaviour simulation,” something these transcendental beings would create after observing and interpreting us. I couldn’t stop thinking about it until finally one day, three years ago, I started actually creating it, along with others at my company, Tha.
In the beginning, nothing was set in stone–we had no idea where this would lead or how it would turn out, but there was one thing we were sure of: the title was going to be “Humanity.”
If you think creating a human group simulation (that’s fun to play), as designed by something or someone not human, sounds like a crazy idea—I agree! I’m no transcendental being; I’m just another guy drowning in human society… I can only try to imagine what it would be like. It’s not been an easy process, to say the least.
But we kept on developing the idea, hoping to end up with something that, if these other-worldly beings were ever to see it, they’d think “Yep, you nailed it” or “Ah yes, so this is what human beings are like.”
Be sure to read Nakamura's full post on Humanity which is fascinating to a fault. He describes in detail the effect of watching birds, people, and how these "trancendental beings" could be whatever you want - aliens, gods, A.I., or what have you.
No word yet on exactly how it plays, or whether it will be a puzzle game, but the footage we see in the trailer does highlight how the players will be able to manipulate the environment to affect the swarm of humans.
Humanity will be out sometime next year for PlayStation 4 with PlayStation VR support.
