The Day Before is currently the most wishlisted game on Steam, an ambitious gritty open-world online MMO survival game that looks a little bit like Ubisoft's The Division meets DayZ with a dash of The Last of Us. Although the PC release was slated for June, which you can see in the trailer after the jump, a switch to Unreal Engine 5 has pushed this back to March 1, 2023.
The Day Before is an open-world MMO survival set in a deadly, post-pandemic America overrun by flesh-hungry infected and survivors killing each other for food, weapons, and cars.
A statement from developer Fntastic made to IGN, it notes, "Millions of people have added The Day Before to their wishlist, making The Day Before one of the most anticipated games in the world. Feeling and understanding the great responsibility that we face, with enormous gratitude in our hearts, were pleased to announce that The Day Before is switching to the new Unreal Engine 5 technology! The transition to a more advanced and adapted open worlds engine, will make the gameplay of The Day Before even more fantastic."
The switch so late in the development cycle might not make a lot of sense, and a delay to March is the result of that, but Unreal Engine 5 has specific and impressive technology to help developers create more immersive and detailed open-world environments. And with The Day Before being an ambitious title in terms of scope, the move should help facilitate some of the grander ideas for the game.
